a visit to a place
a visit to a place in order to meet people or carry out activities in connection with your work
a journey taken for business purposes
Word not found in the dictionary
Travel for business purposes, often paid for at least partially by the employer.
ここで注目したいのは、語義の後半にある often paid for at least partially by the employer という部分です。
Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English
Travel is only used as an uncountable noun. Don’t say: a travel | the travel
You say: Have a nice trip! Don’t say: Have a nice travel!
または Have a good trip. です。Have a nice travel
a journey in which you go somewhere, usually for a short time, and come back again
語義の最後に and come back again が付いているのが決め手です。
そして trip 自体を、a visit to a place that involves a journey と言い換えています。
You go on a trip somewhere. Don’t say: go for a trip somewhere
go on a business trip が正しく、go for a business trip は避ける形です。go for a walk や go for a drive とは前置詞が違う、という点だけ覚えておけば足ります。
Longman
名詞の visit は an occasion when you visit a place or person、訪問という出来事そのものです。
to go to a place as part of your official job, especially to examine it
I will visit your factory on 14 October.
In everyday English, people often say that they come/go to see someone, rather than visit them
場所には visit、人には come to see。
I would like to visit your office and see you and your team.
a short period of time when an employee is sent to another department, office, etc. in order to do a different job
Wiktionary
The process or state of being seconded, the temporary transfer of a person from their normal duty to another assignment.
三日間の出張を I’m on secondment.
第二義になってようやく、a job that someone is sent somewhere to do という「送り出される」要素が入ります。
Someone who is on assignment is doing a particular job or piece of work, usually in a particular place where they have been sent for a period of time
ここにも for a period of time が入っています。
Oxford の例に出てくる a two-year assignment to the Mexico office のように、assignment は年単位の赴任にも使われる語です。
I’m here on a three-day assignment to review the new line.
Subject: Visit to the Hamburg office, 12 to 15 October Dear Ms. Keller, I am writing to let you know that I will be in Hamburg from 12 to 15 October for a business trip. The purpose of the visit is to review the handover of the packaging line and to meet the members of your quality team. I will send a draft itinerary once my flights are confirmed, and I will book my own accommodation near the office. If there is anything you would like me to bring or prepare in advance, please let me know by 30 September. Kind regards, Taro Yamada Production Planning, Marubishi Industries
Cambridge は itinerary を C1 の語として立て、a detailed plan or route of a journey と定義しています。
Oxford は a plan of a journey, including the route and the places that you visit と、訪問先まで含む形で説明します。
Longman は a plan or list of the places you will visit on a journey と、訪問先のリストとして定義しています。
Oxford も British English の不可算名詞として a place to live, work or stay in と定義しています。
Can you arrange some accommodation for me? Don’t say: Can you arrange an accommodation?
In everyday English, people usually say somewhere to live/stay rather than accommodation
I need to find somewhere to stay.
Subject: Appointment request for 13 October, Hamburg office Dear Ms. Keller, Thank you for confirming that my visit on 12 to 15 October works for your team. I would like to arrange an appointment with you and the quality team on Tuesday 13 October. Would any of the following work for you? - 13 October, 10am to 11:30am - 13 October, 2pm to 3:30pm - 14 October, 9am to 10:30am I have attached a one-page agenda so that your team can see what I would like to cover. Could you confirm on or before 3 October? I will then send the final itinerary to everyone on the list. Kind regards, Taro Yamada Production Planning, Marubishi Industries
動詞の arrange については、Cambridge が to plan, prepare for, or organize something と定義しています。
The meeting has been arranged for Wednesday.
arrange the meeting on Wednesday ではなく arrange the meeting for Wednesday。
Dates
use ‘to’ in date ranges and not hyphens, en rules or em dashes – for example, tax year 2011 to 2012, 10 November to 21 December
use ‘to’ in time ranges, not hyphens, en rules or em dashes: 10am to 11am (not 10-11am)
when mentioning a deadline, use ‘on or before’ – for example, ‘Submit the form on or before 6 September 2025’
by 6 September だとその日を含むのかどうかが曖昧になりますが、on or before 6 September なら含みます。
Midnight is the first minute of the day, not the last. You should consider using “11:59pm” to avoid confusion about a single, specific time.
by midnight on Tuesday 14 June
If the content or service helps users who are outside the UK, include “UK time”. For example, “Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm UK time”.
10 November to 21 December | 10 November – 21 December |
4 June 2017 | 4 June, 2017 |
| 提出の期限 | on or before 6 September 2025 | (含むかどうかが曖昧な書き方) |
| 相手が国外にいるとき | 8am to 5pm UK time | 8am to 5pm |
I’m here for の for が指すもの
Subject: Arrived in Hamburg - see you tomorrow at 10am Dear Ms. Keller, Just a short note to say that I arrived in Hamburg this evening. I am staying near the main station, and I will come to your office tomorrow, 13 October, in time for our 10am meeting. My mobile number while I am here is +81 90 1234 5678, and it works on roaming. Please use it if anything changes. Looking forward to seeing you and the team tomorrow. Kind regards, Taro Yamada Production Planning, Marubishi Industries
At the reception desk: Good morning. My name is Taro Yamada, from Marubishi Industries. I'm here for a ten o'clock meeting with Ms. Keller. When you meet your host: Thank you for making time for me during this visit. I'm here for three days, so please tell me if another slot suits you better. When you are introduced to the team: Good morning, everyone. I'm Taro Yamada, from the production planning team in Osaka. I'm here to look at the packaging line and to learn how you run it.
I’m here for
- 用件を置く形=I’m here for a ten o’clock meeting.(十時の打ち合わせで来ました)
- 期間を置く形=I’m here for three days.(三日間の滞在です)
- 目的を動詞で言いたいときは for ではなく to=I’m here to review the line.(ラインを確認しに来ました)
my host in Hamburg
Subject: Thank you for the visit - summary and next steps Dear Ms. Keller, Thank you for your hospitality during my visit to Hamburg last week. The three days were far more useful than I had expected, and I am grateful to you and your quality team for making the time. Here is my summary of what we agreed: - Your team will send the revised line layout on or before 24 October. - We will run the trial batch in Osaka in the week beginning 3 November. - I will circulate the joint checklist to both teams by 11:59pm on 20 October, Japan time. I debriefed my own team this morning, and they were particularly interested in how you handle the changeover between formats. If it is all right with you, I would like to send you two follow-up questions about that next week. Please pass on my thanks to Mr. Brandt and to everyone who walked me through the line. Kind regards, Taro Yamada Production Planning, Marubishi Industries
一つ目が the act of being friendly and welcoming to guests and visitors、客に対して親切に接すること。
Thank you for your hospitality.
Cambridge の例文には we do not accept any free hospitality という一文が載っています。
to question someone in detail about work they have done for you
ですから I debriefed my team.
I reported to my team. や I shared what I learned with my team.
I debriefed my own team.
英語の不在通知は out of office。
not having a position of authority and responsibility in a government or other organization, especially an elected position
She was out of office for five years before regaining the presidency.
Wiktionary
(business) On a break and not working or available for an extended period of time.
(Internet) An email auto-reply informing people that the person they are trying to contact is not working and unavailable for an extended period of time.
用例として引かれているのも、The New York Times や The Guardian の記事です。
turning on an out-of-office I’ll turn on my out-of-office.
Subject: Out of office: 12 to 15 October Thank you for your message. I am out of the office on a business trip from 12 to 15 October, and I will have limited access to email during that time. I will reply to your message on or before 17 October. If your enquiry cannot wait, please contact my colleague Hana Sato at hana.sato@example.com, who is covering for me while I am away. Kind regards, Taro Yamada Production Planning, Marubishi Industries
- 期間を to で書く=12 to 15 October。
- いつ返信するかを書く=I will reply on or before 17 October.
- 代わりの窓口を名前で出す=Cambridge は colleague を one of a group of people who work together と定義しています。
本文中では out of the office と the を入れています。 She’s away on a business trip.
Longman の文法欄が示している形は go on a trip です。
I’m going on a business trip to Hamburg. Cambridge の例文も go on a trip to Norway という形で並んでいます。
Cambridge によると、abroad は動詞のうしろに置く副詞で、in or to a foreign country or countries という意味です。
He’s currently abroad on business.
一方 overseas は形容詞と副詞の両方で、in, from, or to other countries と定義されています。
an overseas business trip とは言えますが、an abroad business trip とは言えません。 I’m going abroad on business.
I have a three-days business trip と書く
正しくは a three-day business trip です。 I’m here for three days.
Welcome back. How did the Hamburg visit go? や I hope the trip went well.
|---|---|---|
| go to business trip | go on a business trip | Longman の文法欄(go on a trip) |
| an abroad business trip | an overseas business trip | Cambridge(abroad は動詞のうしろに置く副詞) |
| Have a nice travel! | Have a nice trip! | Longman
| a three-days business trip | a three-day business trip | Oxford の例(a two-year assignment) |
| Can you arrange an accommodation? | Can you arrange some accommodation? | Longman
