budget、expense、funding、allocation。
Cambridge の語義は a plan to show how much money a person or organization will earn and how much they will need or be able to spend。
Longman の語義は the amount of money that you spend on something。
Cambridge の語義は money given by a government or organization。
Oxford の語義は an amount of money, space, etc. that is given to somebody for a particular purpose
Longman が not using more money than planned と注釈しています
|---|---|---|
| budget | a plan to show how much money …(Cambridge) | 使う前の計画 |
| allocation | an amount that is given for a particular purpose(Oxford) | 配られた後の枠 |
| funding | money given by a government or organization(Cambridge) | 外から入ってくる金 |
| expense | the amount of money that you spend(Longman) | 使った後の金額 |
expense の語義に書いているのは the use of money です。
B2 [C or U] a plan to show how much money a person or organization will earn and how much they will need or be able to spend
B2 [C] the amount of money you have available to spend
Oxford
Oxford
the money that is available to a person or an organization and a plan of how it will be spent over a period of time
the money と a plan が and でつながれています。
Oxford は a balanced budget に (= one where the amount spent matches the amount available) という注釈を付けています。
|---|---|---|
| 予算内で収まった | on/within budget | not using more money than planned |
| 予算を下回った | under budget | using less money than planned |
| 予算が厳しい | a really tight budget | — |
| 予算を組む | draw up a budget | Longman Business Dictionary の例文 |
| 収支を合わせる | balance the budget | make sure that no more is spent than is received as income |
Longman の例文 The project was completed within budget.
Budget
an official statement that a government makes about how much it intends to spend and what the rates of taxes will be for the next year or six months
the amount of money that you spend on something
money that an employee spends while doing their job on things such as travel and food, and which their employer then pays back to them
Longman
|---|---|---|
| 精算を申請する | claim expenses | officially ask your employer to pay you back money |
| 払い戻す | reimburse somebody’s expenses | pay the money someone has spent for business purposes back to them |
If you have to stay overnight, you will be able to claim any expenses back.
operating expenses (= money that a company spends on running its business)
B2 [U] the use of money, time, or effort
C1 money given by a government or organization for an event or activity
given=与えられた、という受け身です。自分で組む budget と、ここが違います。
Longman
money that is provided by an organization for a particular purpose
出典:Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English「funding」(2026-09-21に本文を確認)
Cambridge は for an event or activity、Longman は for a particular purpose です。
College directors have called for more government funding.
Longman Business Dictionary
money provided to an organization, for example in the form of loans, or GRANTs (=money given for a particular purpose)
予算の英語④allocation|辞書が for a particular purpose と書いた語
C2 [C] the part of a total amount of something that someone is given to use in a particular way
the part of a total amount=総額の一部分、が語義の中心です。
Cambridge
C2 [U] the process of giving someone their part of a total amount of something to use in a particular way
Longman も同じ2つに分けており、第2語義を the decision to allocate something, or the act of allocating it としています。
Oxford
We have spent our entire allocation for the year.
The allocation must be made according to a strict set of criteria.
Cambridge の cost の語義は the amount of money needed to buy, do, or make something です。

We have spent our entire allocation for the year, mainly on the two extra booths added in August. Longman の例文 We had a really tight budget.

Cambridge が budget の語義に will need or be able to spend と未来形で書き、Longman が expense の語義に you spend と書いているからです。
Q. within budget
Longman が on/within budget・under budget の形で載せており、例文も completed within budget と無冠詞です。
金額を並べるときだけ against a budget of 10 million yen のように冠詞が付きます。
Q. allocation
言い換えるなら the budget for this year で足ります。
The company will pay the travelling expenses involved in getting to and from the meeting.
- budget=will spend(これから使う)。
- ⛔ expense=you spend(使った)。
- funding=given(与えられた)。
- allocation=the part of a total(総額の一部)。
