「会議室」は英語で meeting room なのか。conference room・boardroom・venue を辞書の「大きさと誰が座るか」で分けた

会議室の英語が決まらず、海外拠点へ送る案内メールで手が止まる。

meeting room なのか conference room なのか boardroom なのか、社内の予約システムには3つとも並んでいる。

相手を間違った部屋へ案内するわけにはいかない。

会議室の英語です。

候補は4つあります。

meeting room、conference room、boardroom、venue。

この4語は言い換えではありません。

英英辞典は、この4語を「部屋の大きさ」と「そこに誰が座るか」で書き分けています。

先に結論を書きます。

会議室の英語は、辞書が「大きさ」と「誰が座るか」で線を引いている

meeting room と conference room は大きさで分かれ、boardroom はそこに座る人で分かれます。

条件が付いていないぶん、どの部屋にも当てはまります。

他の2冊には項目が無い

Oxford Learner’s Dictionaries には、meeting room の単独の見出し語がありません。

2026-09-21 に meeting-room のURLを開いたところ、Did you spell it correctly?＝綴りの確認ページが返りました。

Longman も同じです。

同じ日に開いた conference-room のページも、Longman では Suggestions for conference-room＝候補の提示に変わりました。

3冊のうち、この2語を見出し語として立てているのは Cambridge だけです。

会議室の英語②conference room｜辞書が large と formal を書いた語

conference room には、条件が3つ付いています。

a large room in a hotel or an office building that is usually used for formal business meetings

条件は large（大きい）、in a hotel or an office building（ホテルかオフィスビルの中）、formal（改まった）の3つです。

4人の打ち合わせには大きい

4人で30分話すだけの部屋を conference room と呼ぶと、語義の large とずれます。

社内の小さな部屋は meeting room、大人数が入る部屋は conference room。この置き方なら辞書の語義に沿います。

ただし、部屋の名前が社内で決まっているなら、その名前をそのまま使ってかまいません。

conferenceという語の大きさ

conference 自体が、規模の大きい語です。

会議室の英語③boardroom｜辞書が control と書いた語

boardroom は、誰が座るかで決まる語です。

語義の中心が the people who control＝会社を動かす人たち、です。

部屋の大きさではなく、そこで誰が決めるかが書かれています。

Oxfordは取締役会と書く

Oxford は、さらに具体的です。

a room in which the meetings of the board of a company (= the group of people who control it) are held

Oxford は the board に (= the group of people who control it) という注釈を付けています。取締役会のことです。

Oxford の例文は The directors were working overtime in the boardroom. です。

部屋以外の意味も持つ

Oxford は a boardroom row、The massive boardroom pay awards were criticized by the workers. という例文も載せています。

経営陣そのものを指す使い方です。部屋の名前としてだけ使われる語ではありません。

取引先を boardroom へ案内すると、相手は経営会議に呼ばれたと受け取る可能性があります。

会議室の英語④venue｜辞書が place と書いた語

venue は、部屋ではなく場所です。

public event＝公開の催し、が語義に入っています。

Cambridge の例文は The hotel is an ideal venue for conferences and business meetings. です。

ホテル全体が venue で、その中の部屋が conference room、という関係になります。

予約するのはvenue

Longman は、催しを組む側の動詞を載せています。

The first thing to do is book a venue.

Longman は sporting/conference/concert etc venue の形も載せています。用途を前に置く形です。

Longman Business Dictionary は a place where a large event is arranged to take place と定義し、ここでも large が入ります。

場所が変わったと伝える

Oxford は、変更の連絡に使える1行を載せています。

建物ごと変わったときは change of venue、部屋だけ変わったときは change of room です。

会議室の英語で auditorium を使ってよい場面

大きい部屋の候補として auditorium も挙がります。

rows of seats（座席の列）と a stage（舞台）が語義に入っています。

机を囲んで話す部屋ではなく、前を向いて座る部屋です。

Oxfordは客席と書く

Oxford は、さらに狭く定義しています。

Oxford では、劇場の客席そのものを指します。会議室の候補から外れます。

社内説明会を大講堂で開くときだけ、候補に入る語です。

meeting room と conference room は、2冊が独立した語として扱っていません。

room に修飾語を付けただけの組み合わせだ、という扱いです。

だから、どちらを使っても通じないということは起こりません。

迷ったときの既定値

条件が1つも付いていない meeting room が、会議室の英語の既定値になります。

部屋番号があるなら Meeting Room 3 のように番号を添えれば、大きさの議論そのものが要りません。

人数は seats eight people と数字で伝えています。

大きい部屋を押さえる
