overtime、work late、stay late、extra hours。
Oxford の語義は time that you spend working at your job after you have worked the normal hours=通常の時間を働いたあとに働く時間。
Cambridge は別立てで extra payment for working after the usual time=残業に対する追加の支払い、と書いています。Longman も the money that you are paid for working more hours than usual を2番目の語義にしています
- work late・stay late は「行為」です。Longman の late(副詞)の語義は after the usual time のひと言で、例文が Ellen has to work late tonight. と Can you stay late?
Oxford の extra の語義は more than is usual, expected, or than exists already=additional の同義語。 Employees are expected to put in extra hours without pay.
Teachers work the most unpaid overtime of any public sector profession.、Longman に Many employees work countless hours of unpaid overtime.
- 残業の割増は time and a half と double time で倍率が決まります。Cambridge の time and a half は the usual pay for a job with half the usual pay added on to it=1.5倍、double time は you are paid twice the usual amount=2倍です
Oxford の語義は to work too hard; to make a person or an animal work too hard=働かせすぎです。
American English a period of time added to the end of a sports game=スポーツの延長戦を立てています(英国英語では extra time)
overtime — time that you spend working at your job after you have worked the normal hours
late (adverb) — after the usual time
overtime (B2, adverb, noun [U]) — (time spent working) after the usual time needed or expected in a job
Cambridge
- do overtime — They’re doing overtime to get the job done on time.
- work overtime — Teachers work the most unpaid overtime of any public sector profession.
- on overtime — Everyone is on overtime (= being paid extra for working after the usual time) this weekend.
動詞は do か work です。make overtime とも take overtime とも書かれていません。
Oxford
do/put in/work overtime
put in です。
She puts in a lot of overtime. と I do about five hours’ overtime a week.
overtime (noun [U]) — extra payment for working after the usual time
You can earn some overtime by working after 6.00 p.m.
overtime — the money that you are paid for working more hours than usual
|---|---|---|
| overtime pay | Oxford・Longman | overtime pay/earnings/hours/They need paid holidays and vacations, as well as overtime pay for extra hours. |
| overtime rates | Longman | Generous overtime rates are paid for late-night and weekend work. |
| overtime hours | Oxford | overtime pay/earnings/hours |
| overtime ban | Oxford・Longman Business | The union announced a ban on overtime./Staff at the bank will begin an overtime ban (= refuse to work overtime) tomorrow in a protest over pay. |
| eligible for overtime | Cambridge Business | If you work 45 hours a week and you are eligible for overtime, then you should get paid time and a half for five hours. |
| excessive/paid/unpaid overtime | Oxford Collocations | excessive/paid/unpaid |
US (UK extra time) — a period of time in a sports game in which play continues if neither team has won in the usual time allowed for the game
If the game ends in a tie, overtime will be played. と They lost to the Bears in overtime.
be working overtime (informal) — to be very active
As she put down the phone, her brain was working overtime.
overtime — time that a factory, office etc is operating in addition to its normal hours
The plant has worked overtime in some recent weeks because those models are selling well.
late (adverb) 1 — after the usual time
The stores are open later on Thursdays.
Ellen has to work late tonight.
Can you stay late?
late (adverb) — after the expected, arranged or usual time
She has to work late tomorrow.
They worked late into the night to finish the report.
work late into the night
- I have to work late tonight.=
- I have to do overtime tonight.=
- Can you stay late?=
Longman の late には Can you stay late?
I stayed late at work last night.
Cambridge の late(A1・AFTER EXPECTED TIME)にも、残業の例文が1つ入っています。
Kathryn’s just phoned to say she’s working late this evening.
extra (adjective) — more than is usual, expected, or than exists already (synonym additional)
Employees are expected to put in extra hours without pay.
They need paid holidays and vacations, as well as overtime pay for extra hours.
hours [plural] — a fixed period of time during which people work, an office is open, etc.
Most people in this kind of job tend to work long hours.
- You can contact me on this number out of hours (= when the office is closed).=
- Doctors often have to work out of hours.=
- Bakers have to work unsocial hours.=
She often works into the small hours (= until after midnight).
work into the small hours
after hours (idiom) — after the usual hours of work
I often do some of my own work after hours.
Cambridge Business
after hours (adverb, COMMERCE) — after the time a company or organization usually closes for the day
The store was regularly open after hours.
Longman Business は after-hours を [only before a noun]=名詞の前にしか置けない形容詞として登録しています。 He asked Mr Gray to come to his office for an after-hours meeting.
after-hours (adjective) — happening or open after the normal or legal closing time for a business
Shares are currently falling in after-hours trading.
The police are trying to stop after-hours drinking.
overwork (verb) — to work too hard; to make a person or an animal work too hard
You look tired. Have you been overworking?
She overworks her staff.
too hard です。
Longman
overwork — to work too much or to make someone work too much
You’ve been overworking – why don’t you take a week off?
- Longman — a heart attack brought on by overwork
- Cambridge — He got sick through overwork.
- Cambridge Business — Stress and overwork are blamed for high levels of absenteeism.
- Cambridge Business — The union says they are overworking us to the point where our health is affected.
Cambridge Business の例文は Nurses feel overworked and underpaid. と Overworked employees are taking more sick days. です。
Longman Business も Workers here feel underpaid and overworked.
Oxford
The staff are grossly overworked.
shift [countable] — a period of time worked by a group of workers who start work as another group finishes
I’ve just finished an eight-hour shift.
Longman Business
shift — one of the set periods of time during each day and night when a group of workers in a factory etc are at work before being replaced by another group of workers
Longman はこれを double shift として定義しています=a double shift (= when someone works two shifts one after the other)。
- Oxford — I agreed to work double shifts for a few weeks.=
- Oxford — He works the night shift./Cambridge — Are you on the night shift or the day shift?
- Longman — the graveyard shift (informal)=
- Longman — shift work/working/a shift system
unpaid (C1) — An unpaid debt, tax, etc. has not been paid
unpaid (C1) — Unpaid work is work that you do without getting any money for it
- Cambridge(overtime)— Teachers work the most unpaid overtime of any public sector profession.
- Oxford(unpaid)— They inevitably work countless hours of unpaid overtime.
- Longman(overtime)— Many employees work countless hours of unpaid overtime.
- Longman(コロケーション)— paid/unpaid overtime: Many teachers do a lot of unpaid overtime.
- Longman(unpaid のコーパス)— Employees were often required to work unpaid overtime.
do a lot of unpaid overtime
残業代の割増は time and a half と double time で倍率が決まる
1.5倍が time and a half です。
time and a half — the usual pay for a job with half the usual pay added on to it
Cambridge の米国版はもっと直截で、payment for work that is 50 percent more than the usual rate と書いています。
Cambridge Business
time and a half (HR) — a rate of pay for workers that is fifty per cent more than they usually get, that they earn for working more hours than usual or for working during a public holiday
Controllers are paid time and a half when they work overtime. です。
be paid time and a half We get time and a half for working on Sunday.
double time — If you are paid double time, you are paid twice the usual amount for the time that you spend working, usually because you are working at the weekend or on an official holiday.
⛔ ただし Cambridge は、同じ項目の続きにこう書いています=If you work double time, you work twice as long as normal.
|---|---|---|---|
| time and a half | 1.5倍(fifty per cent more) | 通常より多く働いたとき/祝日に働いたとき | Controllers are paid time and a half when they work overtime. |
| double time | 2倍(twice the usual amount) | 週末や公式の祝日に働いたとき | His overtime rate is double time for Saturday and all weekday time over 8 hours.(Longman のコーパス) |
| overtime rates | 記述なし(標準の尺度に沿う) | 深夜や週末の労働 | Generous overtime rates are paid for late-night and weekend work. |
| overtime pay | 記述なし | 超過した時間に対して | They need paid holidays and vacations, as well as overtime pay for extra hours. |
Longman の double time の語義は double pay given to someone when they work at a time when people do not normally work で、「普通は人が働かない時間帯」という条件が入っています。
残業の代わりに休む制度は time off in lieu(TOIL)
Cambridge
time off in lieu (UK specialized, abbreviation TOIL; US compensatory time off) — time that an employee who has worked extra hours may take off from work
Where eligible members of staff have worked agreed additional hours above their normal working week, the University offers time off in lieu.
agreed additional hours above their normal working week
Subject: Working late tonight - Friday's release Hi Sarah, I'm going to work late tonight to finish the release notes. I should be online until about nine, so message me here if anything comes up. I'll pick up the remaining tickets tomorrow morning. Thanks, Kenji
Subject: Overtime hours for September Hi Mark, Here are my overtime hours for September. I did twenty-two hours' overtime in total, mostly during the migration week. Fourteen of those hours fell on weekdays after six, and eight were on Saturday. Please let me know if you need the daily breakdown. Thanks, Kenji
twenty-two hours’ overtime は、Oxford の I do about five hours’ overtime a week.
人に残業を頼むときは、Longman の Can you stay late?
Subject: Can you stay late on Thursday? Hi Mika, The client moved the review to Friday morning, so we need the deck finished by Thursday night. Could you stay late on Thursday? I'd guess two or three extra hours. If that doesn't work, I can ask Daniel instead - just let me know either way. Thanks, Kenji
two or three extra hours Oxford の extra の語義が more than is usual, expected なので、所定時間より多い分、という意味がそのまま出ます。
Hi Kenji, I can't stay late on Thursday - I have a commitment I can't move that evening. I can start early instead and put in two hours before the stand-up on Friday. Would that help? Mika
put in two hours は、Oxford の put in overtime と同じ動詞です。
presenteeism (business specialized) — the act of staying at work longer than usual, or going to work when you are ill, to show that you work hard and are important to your employer
burnout — extreme tiredness or mental or physical illness caused by working too hard or trying to do too much
Volunteers are working so many hours that they risk burn-out. と They take a one-week break every six weeks to prevent burnout. です。
risk burnout(燃え尽きる危険がある)と prevent burnout(燃え尽きを防ぐ)の2つの形が、そのまま使えます。
workload [C] — the amount of work to be done, especially by a particular person or machine in a period of time
- Cambridge — Teachers are always complaining about their heavy workloads.
- Longman — She’s struggling to cope with the heavy workload.
- Oxford — We have taken on extra staff to cope with the increased workload.
- Oxford — Management is looking at ways of spreading the workload between departments.
- Longman — increase/reduce/add to etc somebody’s workload
heavy workload(重い仕事量)、cope with the workload(仕事量をさばく)、spread the workload(仕事量を分散する)。
work-life balance — the amount of time you spend doing your job compared with the amount of time you spend with your family and doing things you enjoy
It can be difficult to get the right work-life balance.

Oxford の overtime の語義は time that you spend working、Longman の late の語義は after the usual time。
Q. 残業を I will overtime today.
動詞が要るので、do overtime・work overtime・put in overtime のいずれかにしてください。この3つは Oxford が do/put in/work overtime とひとまとめで載せています。
Oxford の語義は to work too hard で、too が入っています。
The union says they are overworking us to the point where our health is affected.
(Cambridge=He got sick through overwork.)
(Cambridge)
Cambridge が独立の名詞として extra payment for working after the usual time を立てているからです。
We don’t do overtime here.
The union announced a ban on overtime. と、Longman Business の an overtime ban (= refuse to work overtime) も参考になります。
Workers here feel underpaid and overworked. と、Cambridge Business の Nurses feel overworked and underpaid.
- 今日これから遅くまで働く=work late(Longman=Ellen has to work late tonight.)
- 人に残ってもらう=stay late(Longman=Can you stay late?)
- 時間の量を数える・制度として言う=overtime(Oxford=time that you spend working at your job after you have worked the normal hours)
- お金の話をする=overtime pay/time and a half/double time
- 払われていない=unpaid overtime(Cambridge=Teachers work the most unpaid overtime of any public sector profession.)
- 営業時間のあと、という時間帯を言う=after hours/out of hours
- ⛔ 働かせすぎだと訴える場合だけ=overwork/overworked
