salary、wage、pay、compensation、income。
Cambridge の語義は a fixed amount of money agreed every year as pay for an employee, usually paid directly into his or her bank account every month。
Longman の語義は money you earn that is paid according to the number of hours, days, or weeks that you work。
Pay is the most general of these three words.
Longman の語義は the money that you earn from your work or that you receive from investments, the government etc。
Longman の類義語欄は used especially when the amount is different each month or year と書いています。
Cambridge の語義は a list of the people employed by a company showing how much each one earns=払う側が持つ名簿と総額です
Cambridge Business の bonus は in addition to their salary、allowance は to pay for a particular thing と語義が分かれています
Don’t say ‘the salary pay’. Just say the pay.
- Compare
- earnings
- pay noun
- wage noun
- remuneration formal
- stipend
Oxford Learner’s Dictionaries
These are all words for money that a person earns or receives for their work.
Cambridge Dictionary(Advanced Learner’s)
a fixed amount of money agreed every year as pay for an employee, usually paid directly into his or her bank account every month
agreed every year(年単位で取り決める)と、paid every month(毎月払われる)です。
Longman
money that you receive as payment from the organization you work for, usually paid to you every month
the organization you work for(自分が所属して働いている組織)が主語側に来ています。
Longman
Salary is usually used for professional jobs such as teachers, managers, doctors etc
Oxford
money that employees receive for doing their job, especially professional employees or people working in an office, usually paid every month
Middle English: from Anglo-Norman French salarie, from Latin salarium, originally denoting a Roman soldier’s allowance to buy salt, from sal ‘salt’.
同じ話が、Oxford の allowance の項目の例文にも出てきます=Roman soldiers received a salt allowance, called salarium, the origin of the word salary.
salary はもともと allowance(用途が決まった支給)だった。
- be on a salary(Longman=British English、Cambridge Business にも be on a salary of sth の形あり)=「〜の給料をもらっている」
- basic salary(Oxford が British English、base salary が North American English と明記)
- starting salary(Longman=the salary someone gets when they start a job)
- final salary(Longman・Oxford とも、年金の算定基礎の文脈で載る)
- the salary scale / structure(Longman=the list of increasing salaries that someone in a job can earn)
- command a salary(Longman=formal、be able to get a particular salary)
money you earn that is paid according to the number of hours, days, or weeks that you work
according to the number of hours(働いた時間数に応じて)。
Cambridge
a particular amount of money that is paid, usually every week, to an employee, especially one who does work that needs physical skills or strength, rather than a job needing a college education
usually every week(ふつうは毎週)。
さらに、physical skills or strength(体を使う技能や力)を必要とする仕事、rather than a job needing a college education(大学教育を必要とする仕事ではなく)とまで書いてあります。
an amount of money that is paid to an employee, esp. for each hour worked
esp. for each hour worked(特に、働いた1時間ごとに)。
|---|---|---|
| Cambridge | noun [ S ](also wages [ plural ]) | 単数形が基本。
| Oxford | [singular](also wages [plural]) | Cambridge
| Longman | [ singular ](also wages [ plural ]) | 3
a weekly wage(単数)でも wages(複数)でも、どちらも正しい。Longman の類義語欄は複数形を見出しにして wages noun [plural](also wage [singular])the money that someone is paid every week by their employer と書いています。
- minimum wage(Longman=the lowest amount of money that an employer can legally pay to a worker)
- living wage(Cambridge Business の See also に掲載)
- basic wage(Longman=what someone earns before overtime pay, tips, or bonuses are added)
- real wages(Longman=a calculation of how much your wages will buy, usually compared to how much you were able to buy in the past)
- wage freeze(Oxford の例文に a voluntary wage freeze、丸かっこ内の語釈が a situation in which wages are not increased for a time)
Oxford の用法注記 wage, pay or salary?
Pay is the most general of these three words.
今は月払いで銀行振込になっていることが多いが、the term wage is still used for these kinds of jobs=その種類の仕事には今でも wage という語を使う。
Employees who work in offices or professional people such as teachers or doctors receive a salary that is paid each month, but is usually expressed as an annual figure.
paid each month(毎月払われる)のに、expressed as an annual figure(年額で表される)。
|---|---|---|
| Cambridge(一般) | the money you receive for doing a job | B1・noun [ U ] |
| Cambridge Business | the money you receive for doing a job | noun [ U ](一般辞書と同文) |
| Oxford(類義語欄) | money that employees earn for doing their job | ラベルなし |
| Longman | money that you are given for doing your job | noun [ uncountable ] |
| Longman Business | the money someone receives for the job they do | noun [ uncountable ] |
Cambridge の一般辞書と Business English 辞書が、pay の名詞について一字一句同じ語義を載せています(the money you receive for doing a job)。
back pay、base pay、basic pay、callback pay、differential pay、double pay、equal pay、guaranteed pay、hazard pay、maternity pay、paternity pay、premium pay、reporting pay、sick pay、strike pay、take-home pay、variable pay。
|---|---|---|---|
| 基本給 | basic pay | base pay | Longman(pay のコロケーション欄) |
| 昇給 | a pay rise | a pay raise | Longman(同上) |
| 給与明細・給料そのもの | a pay cheque | a paycheck | Longman(同上) |
Longman が語義を丸かっこで添えています=after tax etc has been taken away。
Don’t say ‘the salary pay’. Just say the pay.
Old French paier, from Latin pacere “to make calm or peaceful”, from pax
pax=平和。払うことで相手を鎮める、という発想の語です。
money that is paid to someone in exchange for something that has been lost or damaged or for some problem
HR the combination of payment and other benefits that an employee receives for doing their job
the combination of payment and other benefits(支払いとその他の福利の組み合わせ)。
Annual compensation for our executives includes salary, bonus, and other benefits.
| Oxford | money that an employee receives for doing their job | especially North American English |
| Longman | the money someone is paid for doing their job | American English |
Longman はさらに、その語義に SYN remuneration(同義語は remuneration)と付記しています。
Cambridge Business の See also には、employee compensation・social security compensation・unemployment compensation が並んでいます。
My compensation is paid every month.
|---|---|---|
| Cambridge(B2) | money that is earned from doing work or received from investments | investments |
| Oxford | the money that a person, a region, a country, etc. earns from work, from investing money, from business, etc. | investing money / business |
| Longman | the money that you earn from your work or that you receive from investments, the government etc | investments / the government |
investments(投資)は3冊とも共通。
Oxford
a person, a region, a country, etc.=人だけでなく、地域や国の income も同じ語で言います。
- gross income(Longman=income before you have paid tax)/net income(=income after you have paid tax)
- taxable income(Longman=the part of your income on which you pay tax)
- disposable income(Oxford=the money that you have left to spend after tax, etc.)
- family / household income(Cambridge Business・Longman とも掲載)
- people on low incomes(3冊とも例文に掲載。
income は on を取ります(people on low incomes)。Oxford の Patterns 欄にも to be on a(n) income/wage/salary of…
(Cambridge=the amount of money that someone is paid for working/Oxford=the money that you earn for the work that you do/Longman=the money that you receive for the work that you do)
(Cambridge=a company’s profits in a particular period/Oxford=the profit that a company makes/Longman=the profit that a company or country makes)
the total amount of money you earn from any job you do – used especially when the amount is different each month or year
from any job you do(あなたがやっているどの仕事からでも)、used especially when the amount is different each month or year(特に、額が月ごと・年ごとに変わる場合に使う)。
Longman の pay の類義語欄には、もっと短い説明も載っています=all the money that you earn by working。
all(全部)。
|---|---|---|
| Cambridge | formal・noun [ S or U ] | payment for work or services |
| Cambridge Business | formal・HR, WORKPLACE | payment for work that has been done or services that have been provided |
| Oxford | (formal)・[uncountable, countable] | an amount of money that is paid to somebody for the work they have done |
| Longman | formal | the pay you give someone for something they have done for you |
| Longman Business | formal・HUMAN RESOURCES | payment for work, especially in the form of a SALARY and additional benefits such as a car |
Longman Business
especially in the form of a SALARY and additional benefits such as a car=salary
- Cambridge=a remuneration package(語義の下の用例)
- Oxford=Generous remuneration packages are often attached to overseas postings.(例文)/Oxford Collocations Dictionary の欄に Remuneration is used before these nouns: package
- Longman Business=We are offering an attractive remuneration package including a company car and other benefits.(例文)
Cambridge | Oxford | Longman |
|---|---|---|---|
| ①従業員の名簿 | a list of the people employed by a company showing how much each one earns | a list of people employed by a company showing the amount of money to be paid to each of them | (on the payroll の形で掲載) |
| ②支払総額 | the total amount of money paid to the people employed by a particular company | the total amount paid in wages by a company | the total amount of wages paid to all the people working in a particular company or industry |
| ③給与計算という業務 | the activity of managing the money that is paid to employees(Business・[ U ]) | — | the activity of managing salary payments for workers in a company |
be on the payroll
HR to be employed by a particular company
He’s no longer on our payroll.
Cambridge Business
HR, ECONOMICS the total number of people employed by a company, or in an economy=従業員の「人数」。
bonus の語義には in addition to が必ず入る
|---|---|---|
| Cambridge(B2) | an extra amount of money that is given to you as a present or reward for good work as well as the money you were expecting | extra / as well as |
| Cambridge Business | an amount of money given to an employee in addition to their salary as a reward for working well | in addition to their salary |
| Oxford | an extra amount of money that is added to a payment, especially to somebody’s wages or salary as a reward | added to a payment |
| Longman | money added to someone’s wages, especially as a reward for good work | added to |
4つの語義すべてに「上乗せ」を表す語(extra / in addition to / added to / as well as)が入っています。
Cambridge Business の See also には、種類が並んでいます。
acceptance bonus、attendance bonus、loyalty bonus、performance bonus、productivity bonus、retention bonus、signing bonus。
Cambridge Business: money that someone is given regularly by their employer or by the government to pay for a particular thing(an accommodation / car / mileage allowance)
Oxford: the amount of something that is allowed in a particular situation(a baggage allowance)
Cambridge: mainly US(UK usually pocket money)an amount of money that parents regularly give to their child to spend as they choose
Longman: British English an amount of money that you can earn without paying tax on it(a tax allowance)
Oxford: make allowance(s) for something/Longman: something that you consider when deciding what is likely to happen

What’s the pay like? | pay=the money you receive for doing a job(Cambridge B1) |
I’m on a monthly salary. | be on a salary of sth(Cambridge Business)/on a salary(Longman) |
I’m paid an hourly wage. | an hourly wage(Cambridge American) |
| 基本給(英国側) | basic salary / basic pay | Oxford(British English)/Longman(British English) |
| 基本給(米国側) | base salary / base pay | Oxford(North American English)/Longman(American English) |
| 手取り | take-home pay | after tax etc has been taken away(Longman) |
| 残業代 | overtime pay | for extra hours that you work(Longman) |
I got a pay rise. | a pay rise British English(Longman) |
I got a pay raise. | a pay raise American English(Longman) |
| 減給になりました | I took a pay cut. | a pay cut(Longman のコロケーション欄) |
| 同一賃金 | equal pay | the same pay for the same type of work(Longman) |
| 最低賃金 | the minimum wage | the lowest amount of money that an employer can legally pay to a worker(Longman) |
| 待遇全体(米国向け文書) | a compensation package | the combination of payment and other benefits(Cambridge Business) |
| 待遇全体(英国向け・硬い文書) | a remuneration package | Remuneration is used before these nouns: package(Oxford) |
| 賞与制度 | a bonus scheme | a bonus award / payment / scheme(Cambridge Business) |
| 通勤手当 | a travel allowance | a generous travel allowance(Cambridge)/a clothing/living/travel allowance(Oxford) |
| 社員として在籍している | be on the payroll | to be employed by a particular company(Cambridge Business) |
| 給与計算の担当部署 | the payroll department | the payroll department(Longman) |
Subject: Question about the compensation package Dear Ms Alvarez, Thank you for the offer. I'd like to check a few points before I reply. Could you confirm whether the figure in the letter is the base salary, or the total compensation including bonus? I'd also like to know whether the bonus is discretionary or part of a bonus scheme. Finally, could you tell me if any allowances apply - for example a travel or housing allowance? Once I have those details I'll be able to come back to you quickly. Kind regards, Kenji Mori
compensation を「salary と bonus を足したもの」として使っているのは、Cambridge Business の the combination of payment and other benefits という語義に沿った使い方です。
Subject: Hourly wage and overtime pay - two questions Hi Daniel, Before I sign the contract, I'd like to confirm two things about the pay. First, is the hourly wage in the draft the rate for all shifts, or does it change for weekend shifts? Second, how is overtime pay calculated once I go past the standard hours? I'd also like to confirm when the pay is transferred each month. Thanks for your help, Aya Nakamura
Subject: Request for a salary review meeting Hi Sarah, Could we set aside thirty minutes in the next couple of weeks to talk about my salary? I've taken on the two accounts that moved over in the spring, and I'd like to discuss whether a pay rise is possible at the next review. I'm happy to put together a short summary of what has changed in my role beforehand, if that would help. Let me know what suits your diary. Thanks, Kenji
米国側なら a pay rise を a pay raise に替えます。
Don’t say ‘the salary pay’. Just say the pay.
Oxford の Patterns 欄に to be on a(n) income/wage/salary of…
