「名刺」は英語で business card なのか。name card・calling card が辞書にあるかを3冊で確かめた

海外から来た取引先に名刺を差し出す。英語で何と言えばいいのか迷ったまま、Here you are. とだけ言って渡してしまった。business card なのか name card なのか、そもそも渡す動詞は give なのか hand なのか、決まらない。

名刺の英語です。

候補として挙がるのは4つあります。

business card、name card、calling card、visiting card。

Cambridge の語義は a small card that has your name, company name, and the job you do printed on it です
  • name card は、学習英英辞典3冊のどれにも見出しが立っていませんでした(2026-09-18 に3冊とも実際に引いて確認)。Longman は代わりに face card・note card・rate card などを提案し、Oxford は「綴りは合っていますか」という案内ページを返します
  • ただし name card が英語に存在しないわけではありません。英語版 Wiktionary には見出しがあり、語義は A business card. と A nametag in the form of a card. の2つです。学習辞典に無く、記述辞典にはある、という位置づけです
  • ⛔ calling card は名刺ではありません。Cambridge は名刺に近い語義に (in the past) を付け、Oxford は (especially in the past) を付けています。今の主な語義は「電話カード」と「その人らしさを示すもの」です
  • ⛔ visiting card も同じく昔の語です。Oxford は英国英語のラベルを付けたうえで (especially in the past) と書き、わざわざ compare business card と別語扱いにしています
  • 名刺は card の1語でも通じます。Cambridge と Oxford は business card の項目に (also card) と書き、Cambridge の例文は Here, let me give you my card. です
  • 渡す動詞は give か hand です。hand の語義は to pass or give something to somebody(Oxford)で、Cambridge の例文に She handed me a business card があります
  • 交換は exchange です。Oxford の business card の例文がそのまま We exchanged business cards.、Cambridge Business の例文が Delegates walk around the booths introducing themselves and exchanging business cards. です
  • ⛔ swap は名刺には向きません。Cambridge の exchange は B1、swap は C1 のラベルで、swap の例文は雑誌・マフラー・席の交換です
  • 肩書きは job title、部署は department です。Cambridge Business の job title の語義は the name of a particular job in an organization、Oxford の department は a section of a large organization such as a government, business, university, etc. です

名刺は英語で business card|辞書3冊とも見出し語に立てている

いちばん大事なところから答えます。名刺は business card です。迷う必要がありません。

根拠は、3冊とも独立した見出し語として立てていることです。

Cambridge Dictionary の語義はこうです。

business card — noun [C] — a small card that has your name, company name, and the job you do printed on it

Oxford Learner’s Dictionaries の語義はこうです。

business card — a small card printed with somebody’s name and details of their job and company

Longman の語義はこうです。

business card — noun [countable] — a card that shows a business person’s name, position, company, address etc

3冊とも「小さいカード」「名前」「会社」「仕事」の4要素で書いています。日本語の名刺の定義とほぼ一致します。ここで悩む余地はありません。

名刺の英語 business card は数えられる名詞

Cambridge も Longman も [C](countable)のラベルを付けています。

つまり a business card、my business card、business cards と、冠詞と複数形がそのまま働きます。名刺を1枚渡すなら単数、交換するなら複数です。

Oxford の business card の項目に載っている唯一の例文が、その複数形の形です。

We exchanged business cards.

名刺交換という日本語の1語が、英語では exchange business cards という3語の形で辞書に載っています。丸暗記してよい形です。

Longman だけが position(肩書き)と address(住所)まで語義に入れています。日本の名刺の情報量に、いちばん近い書き方です。

Cambridge の Business English 版には、名刺に肩書きが載っていることを示す例文があります。

His business card gives his title as “Chief of Security”.

Did you mean: face card / note card / rate card / time card / name brand / place card / Sim card / bank card / cash card / name day

ページのタイトル自体が Suggestions for name-card になっています。見出し語が存在しないときに Longman が出す画面です。

Oxford で name-card を引くと、返ってくるページのタイトルがこれでした。

綴り違いを疑われています。つまり Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary に name card という見出しはありません。

Cambridge で name-card を引いた結果も同じでした。

WiktionaryありA business card. / A nametag in the form of a card.

名刺を name card と呼ぶ言い方は、英語に存在しないわけではない

ここを雑にまとめると嘘になります。学習英英辞典3冊に無いことと、英語に存在しないことは、別の話です。

英語版 Wiktionary には、name card の見出しがきちんとあります。

name card (plural name cards) — 1. A business card. 2. A nametag in the form of a card.

2番目の語義には1937年の用例まで付いています。

In one first-grade classroom at the beginning of the semester, the children wore name cards suspended from their necks with a string, as an aid to the teacher in learning their names

首から下げる名札のことです。名刺ではありません。name card という語には、この「名札」の側の意味がくっついています。

Wiktionary の calling card の項目にある類義語の並びにも、name card は入っています。

Synonyms: at-home card, business card, name card, meishi, visiting card

つまり name card は「通じないほど変な語」ではありません。ただし学習者向けの3冊が見出しに採らない程度には、周辺的な語です。

名刺を英語で言うとき、結局どちらを選ぶべきか

business card を選びます。

理由は単純で、3冊の辞書が見出しに立て、例文も付け、CEFR相当のレベル表示まで与えているのが business card のほうだからです。相手がどこの英語話者でも、辞書に載っている語のほうが安全です。

  • 自分から言うとき=business card(または短く card)
  • 相手が name card と言ってきたとき=そのまま通じているので直さない
  • 書面・メール・資料に書くとき=business cardで統一する

名刺の英語 calling card|辞書は「過去の習慣」と書いている

calling card を名刺の訳語として覚えている人がいます。辞書を引くと、その理解は半分だけ正しく、実務では危ない、ということが分かります。

Cambridge は calling card に3つの語義を立てています。

1つ目が電話の語義です。

calling card noun [C] (PHONE) US (also phone card) a card that allows the user to make calls from anywhere and charge it to his or her home phone account

2つ目が、名刺に近く見える語義です。

calling card noun [C] (VISIT) (in the past) a card with their name on it that a person left after they had made a formal visit to someone else’s house, etc.

先頭に (in the past) が付いています。しかも「訪問したあとに置いていくカード」で、仕事で差し出すカードではありません。日本の名刺交換とは場面が違います。

3つ目が、比喩の語義です。

calling card noun [C] (OF PERSON) something that describes or shows a person’s typical qualities: Slow romantic songs are his calling card.

Oxford も同じ比喩の語義を立て、例文を3つ並べています。

Bright, bold colours and shapes are his calling card. / The floods were the calling card of climate change. / The pair created the film as a calling card for a bigger project that they have planned.

「その人の代名詞」「その存在を示す痕跡」という意味です。Here is my calling card. と言うと、名刺ではなく「これが私の持ち味だ」と聞こえる可能性があります。

名刺と calling card を辞書の区分で並べる

語義の区分辞書の書き方今の名刺に使えるか
PHONE(電話)Cambridge=US, also phone card使えない(別物)
VISIT(訪問)Cambridge=(in the past)/Oxford=(especially in the past)使えない(昔の習慣)
OF PERSON(比喩)Cambridge=a person’s typical qualities使えない(別の意味になる)
business card3冊とも現役の見出し語これを使う

Cambridge の Business English 版に至っては、calling card の語義が電話カードしかありません。ビジネス辞書の側で名刺の語義が落ちている、ということです。

calling card (also phone card) a card that you can buy or use like a credit card to pay for phone calls, so you do not have to pay with cash: She used a calling card at a pay phone to call relatives in Florida.

Longman も同じ構造です。

calling card — American English — a small card with a name and often an address printed on it, that people in the past gave to people they visited

in the past がここにも入っています。3冊が揃って過去形で書いている語を、今日の商談で使う理由はありません。

⛔ 名刺のつもりで calling card を使うと危ない語義がある

英語版 Wiktionary は、calling card の語義をさらに広く採っています。

そこに並んでいる語義の中に、ビジネスの場で口にしたくないものが2つあります。

(euphemistic) Excrement, especially of a domestic animal. / A card advertising the services of a prostitute. Synonym: tart card

Oxford が、その対応関係をそのまま書いています。

visiting card — (British English) (North American English calling card) — (especially in the past) a small card with your name on it that you leave with somebody after, or instead of, a formal visit — compare business card

注目すべきは末尾の compare business card です。Oxford は visiting card と business card を「同義語」ではなく「比べるべき別の語」として扱っています。辞書が自分で線を引いています。

business card の項目の末尾にも、対になる指示が付いています。

compare visiting card

Longman の visiting card も同じ書き方です。

visiting card — a small card with their name on it which people gave to someone they visited, in the past — SYN calling card American English

gave と過去形で書かれ、さらに in the past が付いています。Longman が載せている唯一の例文も小説の一節で、現代のビジネス文ではありません。

She showed Newman the visiting card she’d kept.

名刺は英語で card の1語でも通じる|3冊とも also card と書いている

実際の会話で business card とフルで言う場面は、そう多くありません。辞書はその事情まで書いています。

Cambridge と Oxford は、business card の見出しのすぐ下に括弧書きを置いています。

(also card)

逆に card の側から引いても、名刺の語義が独立して立っています。

Cambridge の card(INFORMATION)はこうです。

card noun (INFORMATION) B1 [C] (also business card) a small, rectangular piece of stiff paper with information printed on it, especially a person’s job title, business address, and phone number: Here, let me give you my card.

B1 のラベルが付いています。中級で覚える語です。そして例文が Here, let me give you my card. =そのまま名刺を差し出すときの1文です。

Oxford の card も同じ扱いです。

[countable] a business card (= a small card printed with somebody’s name and details of their job and company): Here’s my card if you need to contact me again.

Longman の card も、9番目の語義が名刺です。

BUSINESS [countable] a small piece of thick stiff paper that shows your name, job, and the company you work for — SYN business card

3冊とも card 単独で名刺を指せると書いています。会話では card、書面では business card、と使い分ければ十分です。

名刺を差し出す1文は、辞書の例文をそのまま使える

辞書に載っている形を、そのまま並べます。

Here, let me give you my card.
(Cambridge の card の例文そのまま)

Here's my card if you need to contact me again.
(Oxford の card の例文そのまま)

I'll leave my card and you can contact me when it suits you.
(Longman Business の card の例文そのまま)

3つとも card 単独です。business card とフルで言っている例文は、3冊の card の項目には1つもありませんでした。会話では短いほうが自然だ、ということが例文の側から裏付けられます。

名刺を渡す英語|give・hand・hand out を辞書の語義で割る

渡す動詞の候補は3つです。

give、hand、hand out。この3つは「誰に渡すか」と「何人に渡すか」で切れます。辞書の語義を読むと、境目がはっきり見えます。

名刺を1人に手渡すときは hand か give

Oxford の hand(動詞)の語義はこうです。

hand — to pass or give something to somebody — hand something to somebody: She handed the letter to me. / hand somebody something: She handed me the letter.

文型が2つ示されています。hand something to somebody と hand somebody something。名刺に当てはめると、hand your card to someone と hand someone your card の両方が作れます。

この形を名刺で使っている例文が、Cambridge の card の項目にあります。

She handed me a business card with her name neatly embossed on it.

Oxford の card の項目には、コロケーション(結びつきやすい語)の一覧も載っています。

verb + card: hand somebody, hand out, scan

card と組む動詞の筆頭が hand somebody です。辞書が集計した結果としてそう出ている、ということです。give も通じますが、hand のほうがカード類に付きやすい語だと分かります。

名刺を大勢に配るときは hand out

hand out は句動詞で、語義が別に立っています。

Oxford の語義はこうです。

hand something out (to somebody) — to give a number of things to the members of a group — synonym distribute — Could you hand these books out, please? / She handed out medals and certificates to the winners.

Cambridge の語義も同じです。

hand out — B1 — to give something to each person in a group or place: The teacher asked her to hand out the worksheets.

キーワードは a group と each person in a group です。

Delegates walk around the booths introducing themselves and exchanging business cards.

展示会そのものの描写です。introducing themselves(自己紹介する)と exchanging business cards(名刺交換する)が並んでいます。日本のビジネス習慣と同じ並びが、英語の辞書にそのまま載っています。

名刺交換の exchange は、辞書のどの語義に当たるか

exchange の動詞には、大きく3つの語義があります。

  • give and receive=互いに同じ種類のものを渡し合う(名刺交換はここ)
  • money=通貨を両替する
  • goods=買った品物を別のものに取り替えてもらう

1つ目の語義を、Oxford はこう書いています。

[transitive] to give something to somebody and at the same time receive the same type of thing from them — Everyone in the group exchanged email addresses. / exchange something with somebody: I shook hands and exchanged a few words with the manager.

the same type of thing=同じ種類のもの、という条件が入っています。名刺と名刺はまさに同じ種類のものです。exchange の中核の語義に、ぴったり収まります。

Cambridge の語義は B1 のラベル付きで、もっと短いです。

exchange — verb [T] — B1 — to give something to someone and receive something from that person: We can exchange addresses when we see each other. / We exchanged greetings before the meeting.

exchange addresses(連絡先を交換する)と exchange greetings(挨拶を交わす)が両方載っています。名刺交換は、この2つの中間にある動作です。

⛔ 名刺交換に swap を使わないほうがいい理由

swap も「交換する」です。

Oxford の語義は exchange とほとんど同じ文になります。

swap — [intransitive, transitive] to give something to somebody and receive something in exchange — I’ve finished this magazine. Can I swap with you? / I swapped my red scarf for her blue one. / Can we swap places? I can’t see the screen.

ところが例文が全部くだけています。雑誌、マフラー、座席。どれも友人同士の会話です。ビジネス文書の例文が1つもありません。

レベル表示にも差が出ています。

語Cambridge のレベル例文の場面名刺に使えるか
exchangeB1連絡先・挨拶・展示会の名刺交換使う
swapC1雑誌・服・座席の取り替え使わない

Cambridge の swap の語義は to give something and be given something else instead=「代わりに別のものをもらう」です。something else instead という言い方が入る時点で、同種のものを渡し合う名刺交換とはずれています。

Cambridge の swap に載っている例文も、その性格を示しています。

Do you want to swap seats with me?

job title — noun [C] — HR — the name of a particular job in an organization: Pay varies depending on seniority and job title. / Under the new deal his job title will change to Vice Chairman.

HR(人事)のラベル付きで、語義が the name of a particular job in an organization=組織内での特定の職の名称、です。名刺に刷る肩書きそのものを指します。

なお job title の見出しは Oxford と Longman には立っていませんでした(2026-09-18 に実際に引いた結果、どちらも綴り確認・候補一覧のページが返りました)。

ただし Cambridge の title の語義の中に、job title の形が例文として入っています。

What’s your job title now – are you managing director?

Cambridge の米国版の title には、さらに端的な語義があります。

title noun (RANK) [C] a word or phrase that shows a person’s rank or job: Her job title is director of human resources.

a word or phrase=1語でも句でもよい、と書いてあります。director of human resources のような長い肩書きも title です。名刺の肩書き欄が長くなっても問題ありません。

⛔ 名刺の title には Mr・Ms の意味もある

ここが落とし穴です。

Cambridge の title(PERSON)の語義を読むと、肩書きと敬称が同じ語に同居しています。

title noun (PERSON) [C] a word that is used before someone’s name, stating their social rank, qualifications, position in an organization, gender, etc.

Oxford も同じ語義を立てています。

[countable] a word in front of a person’s name to show their rank or profession, whether or not they are married, etc. — Give your name and title (= Mr, Miss, Ms, Dr, etc.).

フォームで Title と書かれた欄があったら、それは肩書きではなく Mr / Ms / Dr を選ぶ欄です。名刺情報を入力する画面で、ここを部長・課長と書いてしまうと通りません。

Cambridge の例文が、その用法をはっきり示しています。

Use the pull-down menu to enter your title (Mr, Ms, Mrs, Dr, etc.).

迷いを消したいなら job title と2語で書きます。job が付いた瞬間、敬称の意味は消えます。名刺の話をするときは job title で統一するのが安全です。

名刺の position は「職そのもの」を指す

position は肩書きの文字列ではなく、その職のポストを指します。

Oxford の語義はこうです。

[countable] (formal) a job — synonym post — He held a senior position in a large company.

Oxford は、job との使い分けまで書いています。

Position usually refers to a particular job within an organization, especially at a high level, and is not usually used about jobs generally. It is also often used in job applications, descriptions and advertisements.

especially at a high level=特に上位の職、と書かれています。さらに求人票や応募書類でよく使われる語だとも書かれています。名刺そのものより、履歴書や紹介文で働く語です。

Cambridge の Business English 版も同じ方向です。

HR, WORKPLACE a job, especially one that is important: He filled the position of Executive Director recently vacated by Terry John. / He applied for the position of marketing manager.

ただし Longman の business card の語義そのものが a card that shows a business person’s name, position, company, address etc なので、名刺の文脈で position を使うこと自体は辞書が裏づけています。肩書き欄の見出し語としては job title、文中で職を指すときは position、と割るときれいです。

名刺の部署名は department

Oxford の department の語義はこうです。

department (abbreviation Dept) — a section of a large organization such as a government, business, university, etc. — the marketing/sales, etc. department / I work in the sales department.

略語が Dept であることも辞書に書いてあります。名刺の限られたスペースで略すときは、この形が正式です。

Cambridge の語義は A2 のレベル表示付きで、もっと簡単です。

a part of an organization such as a school, business, or government that deals with a particular area of study or work

B: Great. My direct line is on the card, and my e-mail address is there too.

A: Perfect. I'll send you the meeting notes this afternoon.

A: Could I take one of yours? I'll e-mail you my details this afternoon.

B: Of course. Here you go.

A: Thank you. You'll have my name, job title and direct line by five o'clock.

ここでは business cards とフルで言っています。「名刺そのものが無い」という事実を伝える場面なので、語を省略しないほうが誤解がありません。

job title を会話の中で使っている行があります。Cambridge Business の語義 the name of a particular job in an organization が、そのまま働いている形です。

Please scan every card you collect into the shared contact list on the same day.

名刺の英語に関するよくある質問

Q. 名刺を name card と言ったら通じませんか

通じないとは言えません。英語版 Wiktionary に見出しがあり、語義の1番目が A business card. だからです。ただし Cambridge・Oxford・Longman の3冊には見出しがありませんでした(2026-09-18 に実際に引いて確認)。自分から書くなら business card を選びます。

Q. 名刺の英語として calling card は完全に間違いですか

間違いとまでは言えませんが、辞書が過去形で書いています。

Cambridge は (in the past)、Oxford は (especially in the past)、Longman は in the past と、3冊が揃って同じ注記を付けています。しかも Cambridge Business 版では、名刺の語義そのものが消えて電話カードだけになっています。

Q. 名刺を渡すとき business card と card のどちらを言いますか

会話では card です。3冊の card の項目に載っている例文が、すべて card 単独だからです(Here, let me give you my card. / Here’s my card if you need to contact me again. / I’ll leave my card and you can contact me when it suits you.)。書面では business card と書きます。

Q. 名刺交換を1語で言える英語はありますか

3冊を引いた範囲では、1語の名詞は見つかりませんでした。

辞書に載っているのは exchange business cards という句の形です。Oxford の business card の例文が We exchanged business cards.、Cambridge Business の例文が exchanging business cards です。この句をそのまま覚えるのが早道です。

Q. 名刺の肩書き欄に Title と書いてあったら何を入れますか

文脈で割れます。名刺のデザイン上の欄なら肩書き(Cambridge 米国版=a word or phrase that shows a person’s rank or job)、申込フォームの Title なら Mr / Ms / Dr です(Cambridge の例文=Use the pull-down menu to enter your title (Mr, Ms, Mrs, Dr, etc.))。迷う場面なら job title と2語で書いてもらうのが安全です。

Q. 名刺を英語で meishi と書いても通じますか

英語版 Wiktionary には、英語の語として meishi の見出しが立っています。

meishi (plural meishis or meishi) — A Japanese business card. — Typically, a meishi features the company name at the top in the largest print, followed by the job title and then the name of the individual.

Borrowed from Japanese 名刺 と語源まで書かれています。ただし学習英英辞典3冊には見出しがありません。日本の名刺文化そのものを説明する文脈でだけ使う語です。

Q. 名刺を渡すのに give と hand はどちらが自然ですか

どちらも辞書に例があります。give は Cambridge の card の例文(let me give you my card)、hand は同じ Cambridge の card の例文(She handed me a business card)です。

  • ⛔ calling card=名刺の語義に (in the past) が付く。今の主用途は電話カードと比喩
  • ⛔ visiting card=英国英語・(especially in the past)。Oxford は business card と別語として扱っている
  • 渡す=hand somebody your card / give someone your card / leave my card
  • 配る=hand out(語義は to give a number of things to the members of a group)
  • 交換する=exchange business cards(B1)。swap は C1 でくだけすぎる
  • 肩書き=job title。部署=department(略 Dept)。職=position

この記事でいちばん確かめたかった name card については、学習英英辞典3冊のページを実際に落として本文を検索し、語義の行が0件であることを確認しました。「たぶん無い」ではなく「引いたら無かった」です。

そして同じやり方で Wiktionary を引いたら、そこには有りました。無いのは3冊の学習辞典であって、英語そのものではありません。この2つを分けて書けるかどうかが、辞書を引く意味です。

名刺を差し出すときの1文だけ、最後にもう一度置いておきます。

Here, let me give you my card.

Cambridge の card の項目に載っている例文そのままです。自分で組み立てた英語ではないので、間違えようがありません。
