meeting なのか appointment なのか discussion なのか、どれを打っても間違っている気がする。

候補は4つあります。
meeting、appointment、discussion、briefing。
この4語は言い換えではありません。
英英辞典は、この4語を「時間の枠を取ること」と「中身を話すこと」で書き分けています。

- 社内外の打ち合わせは meeting です。Cambridge の語義は a planned occasion when people come together。planned＝あらかじめ決めてある、が語義に入っています
- appointment は「相手の時間を1枠もらう」ときの語です。Cambridge の語義は a formal arrangement to meet or visit someone at a particular time and place。時刻と場所が語義に書き込まれています
- ⛔ discussion は集まりの名前ではありません。Cambridge は the activity in which people talk about something＝活動、と定義しています
- ⛔ briefing は打ち合わせではなく「事前の説明」です。Cambridge の語義に just before they do something です
- 迷ったら meeting で問題ありません。Longman は meeting に S1 W1（話し言葉・書き言葉ともに最頻出1000語）の記号を付けています

meeting と appointment は「集まりそのもの」を指し、discussion は「そこで起きている行為」を指します。

枠を取る語と行為の語
meeting と appointment は、カレンダーに入る名詞です。
discussion は、カレンダーに入れても意味が通りません。
Cambridge が discussion に付けているラベルは [ C or U ]＝可算にも不可算にもなる名詞です。
不可算で使えるということは、輪郭のある1回の集まりではない、ということです。
相手が1人か複数か
appointment の語義には someone が入っています。
meeting の語義には people が入っています。
1対1で相手の時間をもらうなら appointment、3人以上が集まるなら meeting。この線は辞書の語義の単数・複数がそのまま示しています。

あらかじめ決まっていること、そしてオンラインでもよいことが、語義の本文に書き込まれています。
オンライン会議も meeting
online が語義そのものに入っているので、Web会議を meeting と呼ぶのに言い換えは要りません。
Cambridge は同じ項目の例文にも、リモートの働き方を置いています。

「オンラインだから online meeting と書かないといけない」ということは、辞書のどこにも書かれていません。
偶然会うのも meeting
Cambridge は meeting に第2語義を置いています。

第1語義が planned、第2語義が not planned です。
meeting という語そのものは、予定の有無を含んでいません。
ビジネスの文脈で meeting と書けば第1語義で読まれるので、実務では気にしなくてかまいません。
Longman が付けた S1 W1
Longman は meeting に ●●● S1 W1 の記号を付けています。
S1 は話し言葉の最頻出1000語、W1 は書き言葉の最頻出1000語を意味する記号です。

次に appointment です。
Cambridge の語義は次のとおりです。

meeting の語義には無くて、appointment の語義にはあるものが3つあります。formal、a particular time and place、someone です。
時刻と場所が語義に入る
appointment は、時刻と場所が決まっていない状態では使えません。
Cambridge が語義に at a particular time and place と書いているからです。
Oxford も同じ形で定義しています。
a formal arrangement to meet or visit somebody at a particular time, especially for a reason connected with their work

Oxford はさらに connected with their work＝相手の仕事に関係する用件で、と付け足しています。
相手の業務の枠をもらう、という含みがここに出ています。
by appointment の意味
Cambridge は熟語 by appointment も独立の項目として載せています。

オフィスの見学や来訪の案内に Visits are by appointment only. と書けば、事前に枠を取ってください、という意味になります。
動詞は make か book
Cambridge の例文には make an appointment、cancel an appointment、keep an appointment、miss an appointment の4つが並んでいます。
Oxford は to book/make/keep an appointment の形で載せています。

discussion は、集まりの名前ではありません。
Cambridge の語義を見ると理由がはっきりします。

語義の主語が the activity＝その活動、になっています。
meeting の語義の主語が occasion＝機会、であるのと対になっています。
under discussion の型
Cambridge は under discussion に注釈を付けています。
The matter is still under discussion (= being considered).

辞書が being considered＝検討中、と言い換えているので、「まだ決まっていない」と伝えたいときにそのまま使えます。
社内の状況を外へ知らせるときに、断定を避けられる1行です。
hold discussions with の形
Cambridge は hold/have discussions with を型として載せています。
Longman も discussion with の形で例文を置いています。

複数形の discussions は、1回で終わらない継続的な話し合いを指します。
Oxford は The pair held informal discussions on a number of topics. という例文で、同じ形を載せています。
Longman の類語の線引き
Longman は discussion の項目に THESAURUS（類語）欄を置いて、近い語との違いを1語ずつ書いています。

打ち合わせの英語④briefing｜辞書が before と書いた語
briefing は、打ち合わせと訳されることがありますが、辞書の語義は別物です。

語義の中心は information＝情報であって、集まりではありません。
集まりの意味は or a meeting where this happens として、あとから足されています。
情報は一方向に流れる
Oxford の語義は、さらにはっきりしています。
a meeting in which people are given instructions or information

are given＝与えられる、という受け身です。参加者は受け取る側に置かれています。
意見を出し合う場に briefing を使うと、語義とずれます。
Longman は before と書く
Longman の語義にも、同じ時間の指定が入っています。

3冊とも before を語義に入れています。何かを実行する直前、という時間の位置が briefing の中核です。
Longman が briefing に付けている頻度の印は、3つのうち1つだけが塗られた形です。
AWL は学術語彙リストに入っている語であることを示し、●1つは頻度が中程度であることを示します。
打ち合わせの英語で conference を使ってよい場面
会議室を conference room と呼ぶので、打ち合わせも conference でよいのか、という疑問が出ます。
Cambridge の語義を見ると、規模が違います。
B1 an event, sometimes lasting a few days, at which there is a group of talks on a particular subject, or a meeting in which especially business matters are discussed formally

Longman はもっと直接的です。

large と a lot of people と several days の3つが揃っています。
30分の社内の打ち合わせを conference と呼ぶと、辞書の語義からは大きすぎます。
部屋の名前は別の話
conference room という部屋の呼び名は定着しているので、そのまま使って問題ありません。
部屋の名前と、そこで行う打ち合わせの呼び名は、別々に決めてかまいません。
Cambridge は meeting の項目の関連語に conference (MEETING) を挙げており、両者が近い位置にあることは辞書も認めています。
打ち合わせの英語を、辞書のCEFRと頻度記号で並べ直す
Cambridge は語に CEFR のレベルを付け、Longman は頻度の記号を付けています。
この2つを並べると、どれが基本語かが数字で出ます。

丁寧さの差ではありません。
Cambridge が appointment の語義に formal と書いているので、形式が整っている印象はあります。
ただし辞書は、meeting を「くだけた語」とはどこにも書いていません。人数と用件で選ぶのが正解です。
Q. オンライン会議は何と書きますか
meeting のままで通ります。
