boss、manager、supervisor、superior。

語義は the person who is in charge of an organization and who tells others what to do。
Oxford の語義は a person who is in charge of running a business, a shop or a similar organization or part of one。
Cambridge のビジネスの語義が makes sure that the work is done correctly and according to the rules。
He is my immediate superior
Cambridge の語義は the person who is directly responsible for managing the work of someone else in a company or business, and who is one level above that person。
3冊とも chief を「組織のいちばん上の人」と定義していて、しかも Longman は used especially in job titles and in news reports=肩書きと報道で使う語だです
Cambridge の語義は a person who has a less important position than you in an organization。

boss — the person who is in charge of an organization and who tells others what to do

後半に tells others what to do が入っています。

supervisor — a person who is in charge of a group of people or an area of work and who makes sure that the work is done correctly and according to the rules

こちらは makes sure that the work is done correctly=仕事が正しく行われているか確かめる、です。

語辞書が語義の中で使った動詞CEFR(Cambridge)その人の役目
bosstells others what to do(Cambridge)A2指示を出す
manageris in charge of running … or part of one(Oxford)A2組織を回す
supervisormakes sure that the work is done correctly(Cambridge Business)C1仕事を見る
superiorhas a higher position than another employee(Cambridge Business)C1(名詞)位が上にいる

Oxford

boss — a person who is in charge of other people at work and tells them what to do

Cambridge と Oxford が、同じ tells (others / them) what to do を語義に入れています。

Longman

boss — the person who employs you or who is in charge of you at work

I’ll ask my boss if I can take the afternoon off.

company / union / bank bosses

Cambridge はこの語義を the person in charge of a company=会社の最上位、です。

Hospital bosses protested at the decision.

  • ゲームのボス=in computer games, an important enemy who is usually hard to defeat(例文=Bosses are generally much stronger than other opponents the player has faced up to that point.)
  • 装飾の突起=a raised rounded decoration, such as on a shield or a ceiling
  • 動詞の boss=to tell someone what to do a lot(例文=He enjoys bossing the younger children.)

manager — the person who is responsible for managing an organization

Oxford

manager — a person who is in charge of running a business, a shop or a similar organization or part of one

末尾の or part of one が効いています。

Longman Business

manager — someone whose job is to manage all or part of a company or organization, or a particular activity

〈場所〉+ managera bank manager/a station managerCambridge
〈部署〉+ managerthe sales/marketing/human resources managerOxford
〈位〉+ managertop / senior managerCambridge Business

Cambridge Business

A sign of a good manager is knowing how to delegate.

  • ソフトウェア=a computer program or system that helps you to control or organize a particular type of activity(例文=A password manager is a must for anyone with multiple logons.)
  • スポーツチームの監督=the person whose job is to organize and sometimes train a sports team(例文=a football manager)
  • 芸能のマネージャー=a person who deals with the business affairs of an actor, a musician, etc.

supervisor — a person whose job is to supervise someone or something

Oxford はもっと短く、a person who supervises だけです。

supervisor — a person who is in charge of a group of people or an area of work and who makes sure that the work is done correctly and according to the rules

Longman Business

supervisor — someone who is in charge of a group of workers or a particular area of work

supervisor — in some colleges, a teacher with responsibility for a particular student

Oxford

I have a meeting with my supervisor about my research topic.

Cambridge

A town or county supervisor is an elected official who manages local government services.

Cambridge

superior — a person or group of people who are higher in rank or social position than others

Cambridge Business

superior — someone who has a higher position than another employee or group of employees in a company or organization

  • I will pass your complaint on to my superiors.(苦情を上に回す)
  • We will need a letter of recommendation from one of your superiors.(推薦状を上の人から)
  • Conflicts can usually be contained if dealt with by an immediate superior.(もめごとを直属の上が処理する)
  • 71% of workers surveyed said they had been insulted, ignored, or otherwise treated discourteously by their superiors.(調査の文)

Cambridge

superior — better than average or better than other people or things of the same type

superior — A superior person believes that or acts as if they are better than other people

I can’t stand Amanda – she’s so superior. Longman は同じ語義に used to show disapproval というラベルまで付けています。

  • superior products / brands(優れた商品・ブランド)
  • We pride ourselves on having achieved a corporate culture of superior performance.(優れた業績の企業文化)
  • Its products are seen as superior to many models produced by its American rival.(他社より優れている)

Longman Business は「宣伝で特に使われる」とまで書いています(used especially in advertising)。

superior(名詞)C1上級の語制度の文だけ

He is my immediate superior
Conflicts can usually be contained if dealt with by an immediate superior.
A significant proportion of workers felt they had been bullied by their immediate supervisor.

He is my immediate superior

line manager — the person who is directly responsible for managing the work of someone else in a company or business, and who is one level above that person

Oxford

line manager — a person who is one rank above somebody in a company and who is responsible for passing information and instructions to them

Review your training needs with your line manager.

a manager who is directly in charge of producing goods or providing services, and who works most closely with ordinary employees=製造や提供の現場を直接見る管理者、です。

subordinate — a person who has a less important position than you in an organization

He left the routine checks to one of his subordinates.

You should communicate clearly both to subordinates

chief — the person in charge of a group or organization, or the ruler of a tribe

語義の後半に the ruler of a tribe=部族の長、が入っています。

Longman

chief — the most important person, or one of the most important people, in a company or organization – used especially in job titles and in news reports

used especially in job titles and in news reports=肩書きと報道で特に使う、と明記されています。

Subject: Confirming with my manager — reply by Thursday

Dear Ms Carter,

Thank you for the revised schedule.

I need to confirm the delivery date with my manager before I can agree to it.

I will have an answer for you by Thursday.

If that is later than you need, please tell me and I will ask for a decision sooner.

Best regards,
Kenji Sato
Overseas Sales, Marubishi Trading

Subject: New contact for your account from 1 October

Dear Mr Silva,

From 1 October, my line manager will change.

Your new main contact will be Aya Morita, Sales Manager, who reports to Hiroshi Tanaka.

I have copied Aya on this email so that she has your details.

I will stay on the account until the end of October to help with the handover.

Best regards,
Kenji Sato
Overseas Sales, Marubishi Trading

Subject: Pricing request — waiting on approval

Hi Team,

The client has asked for a 5% discount on the annual contract.

I have passed the request to my immediate supervisor for a decision.

I expect an answer on Monday and will update this thread as soon as I have it.

Please hold the quotation until then.

Thanks,
Kenji

Cambridge Business

ただし Cambridge は名詞の superior に C1 を付け、形容詞には believes that or acts as if they are better than other people という語義(C2)も立てています。

Cambridge は supervisor に in some colleges, a teacher with responsibility for a particular student という語義を立て、Oxford は例文に I have a meeting with my supervisor about my research topic.

Longman Business の manager の語義に or a particular activity があるので、the project manager のように活動名を足せば区別できます。

Longman は chief に used especially in job titles and in news reports です。

Oxford の line manager の語義にある passing information and instructions to them の関係を、1語で言える形です。She reports to the Sales Manager.

I need to confirm with my manager

  • 指示を出す人=boss(Cambridge・Oxford が語義に tells … what to do を入れた唯一の語/A2)
  • 組織や一部を回す人=manager(Oxford の or part of one/A2)
  • ルール通りか見る人=supervisor(Cambridge Business の according to the rules/C1)
  • 位が上にいる人=superior(役目は語義に書かれていない/C1・制度の文だけ)
  • 直属なら immediate を足す(Oxford の例文=He is my immediate superior)

迷ったら my boss、社外に出す文なら my manager。
