海外の取引先から「この件の担当者はどなたですか」と英語で聞かれて、返信の1行目で手が止まる。
person in charge と書けばよいのか、contact person なのか、それとも representative なのか。
担当者を英語で言うとき、日本語の「担当者」1語にそのまま重なる英単語はありません。
自分が担当だと名乗るのか、相手の担当を探すのか、別の人を窓口として紹介するのかで、選ぶ語が変わるからです。
- person in charge は、辞書に載っている言い方なのか
- contact person と書けば、窓口の担当者として通じるのか
- representative は「担当者」の訳として使ってよいのか
- メールの署名には、担当業務をどう書けばよいのか
この記事では、英英辞典3冊（Cambridge Dictionary・Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary・Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English）に載っている語義と例文だけを根拠に、担当者の英語を場面ごとに並べ直しました。
担当者の英語は場面で4つに分かれる｜先に結論
結論は、次の表のとおりです。

いちばん守備範囲が広いのは in charge of です。
Cambridge は in charge を B1 のフレーズとして載せており、仕事でも日常でも使える基本の形になっています。
一方で、日本語の「担当者」を直訳した person in charge は、3冊とも見出し語に立てていません。
ただし Longman の charge の項には、He asked to speak to the person in charge. という例文が出てきます。
person in charge は「in charge の状態にある人」という組み合わせで、決まった役職名ではないということ。
窓口としての担当者を言いたいなら、point of contact のほうが辞書の語義にそのまま合います。
反対に contact person という並びは、今回確かめた3冊のページに1か所も出てきません。
担当者の英語① in charge of｜Cambridge が B1 に置いた基本の形
担当者を英語で名乗るとき、最初に手に取りたいのが in charge of です。
in charge の語義
Cambridge Dictionary の in charge、語義です。
B1 being the person who has control of or is responsible for someone or something
語義の中に control（管理）と responsible（責任）の2つが並んでいるのが、この語の特徴。
Cambridge の例文も、部署を誰が率いるのかという話になっています。
Who will be in charge of the department when Sophie leaves?
Oxford の charge の項にも、仕事の担当を表す例文が並びます。
John has been put in charge of marketing.
put A in charge of B は「AをBの担当にする」形で、任された側を主語にすると受け身になります。
ビジネス辞書は「管理する人」
Longman のページには、一般の語義とは別に Longman Business Dictionary の語義も載っています。
be in charge (of) to be the person who manages a group of people, an organization, or an activity
manages（管理する）という動詞が入っているため、in charge of には「その件を仕切っている」響きが乗ります。
小さな作業を1つ受け持っているだけなら、後で取り上げる handle や look after のほうが範囲に合う場面もあるでしょう。
自分から名乗るときの形
名乗るときは、I’m in charge of のあとに担当している業務を名詞で置きます。
- I’m in charge of shipping for your orders.（ご注文の出荷を担当しています）
- I’m in charge of this project.（この案件の担当です）
名乗りの前後に置く挨拶や、所属の言い方まで含めた自己紹介の型は、英語のビジネス自己紹介の記事にまとめています。↓
担当者の英語② responsible for｜辞書が2つの意味を並べた語
in charge of と並んでよく使われるのが、be responsible for です。
Oxford は「仕事を持つ」
Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary の responsible、第1語義です。
having the job or duty of doing something or taking care of somebody/something; in charge of somebody/something
語義の後半に in charge of somebody/something を並べており、Oxford はこの2つを同じ意味の側に置いています。
Mike is responsible for designing the entire project.
for のあとに動名詞を続けて、担当している作業そのものを言えるのが使いやすいところ。
Longman は「責めを負う」が先
注意したいのは、Longman の語義の並び順です。
Longman は responsible の1番目に GUILTY というラベルを立て、事故やミスが「その人のせい」である意味を置いています。
if someone is responsible for an accident, mistake, crime etc, it is their fault or they can be blamed
「担当している」の意味は、その次の2番目に来ます。
having a duty to be in charge of or to look after someone or something
Oxford にも「責められる側」の意味の例文として、次の1行があります。
Who’s responsible for this mess?
トラブルの最中に Who is responsible for ～? と聞くと、責任追及に読まれる余地が残ります。
問題が起きた場面で担当者を探すなら、責める意味を持たない handle を使って Who handles ～? と尋ねると、その読み違いは起きません。
担当者の英語③ point of contact｜窓口の担当者を指す語
社外の人に「この件の窓口は私です」と伝えたいとき、いちばん語義に沿うのが point of contact です。
Oxford と Longman の語義
Oxford は point of contact を、contact と point の両方の項に成句として載せています。
a place where you go or a person that you speak to when you are dealing with an organization
Oxford の例文は、受付が最初の窓口になるという内容です。
The receptionist is the first point of contact most people have with the clinic.
Longman は point of contact を独立した見出しに立て、最初の語義を次のように置いています。
a place you go to or a person you meet when you ask an organization for help
Longman はあわせて first/initial point of contact という組み合わせを示しており、社外向けの窓口担当をそのまま表せる語だと分かります。
- I will be your point of contact for this project.（この案件の窓口を務めます）
- Please use me as your main point of contact.（窓口は私に一本化してください）
Cambridge は見出し語として未収録
3冊のうち Cambridge だけは、point of contact を見出し語にしていません。
ページを開くと point of contact isn’t in the Cambridge Dictionary yet. という表示が出て、コーパスの例文だけが並ぶ形です。
ただし Cambridge Business English の contact の項には、取締役が株主の窓口役を務めるという意味で act as their point of contact を使った例文が入っています。
contact 1語は「つて」
point of contact を縮めて contact だけにすると、意味がずれます。
Cambridge の contact のうち、人を指す名詞の語義です。
A2 [C] a person, especially someone in a high position, who can give you useful information or introductions that will help you at work or socially
役に立つ情報や紹介をくれる人、つまり人脈や「つて」を指す語義になっています。
Oxford も a person that you know, especially somebody who can be helpful to you in your work と、知り合いとしての contact を載せています。
my contact at ABC は、「ABC社の担当者」よりも「ABC社にいる私のつて」と読まれやすい表現です。
contact person のほうは、Oxford で引くと Word not found in the dictionary と表示され、Longman と Cambridge でも見出し語のページは開きませんでした。
辞書で裏が取れる言い方に寄せるなら、窓口の担当者は point of contact が確実です。
担当者の英語④ handle・look after・deal with｜業務を受け持つ動詞
担当者という名詞にこだわらず、「受け持つ」という動詞で言う方法もあります。

handle は担当に最も近い
Cambridge の handle、仕事に関わる語義です。
B1 [T] to deal with, have responsibility for, or be in charge of
deal with・responsibility・in charge の3つを1行に並べた語義なので、「担当する」に最も近い動詞と言えます。
Who handles the marketing in your company?
この例文は、そのまま担当者を尋ねる1行として使える形。
Cambridge Business English も handle に「組織立てたり管理したりする責任を持つ」語義を立て、The office in Europe also handles marketing for the region. という例文を添えています。
look after と deal with の違い
Cambridge の look after は A2 のレベルで、世話をする意味と担当する意味を1つの語義にまとめています。
A2 to take care of or be in charge of someone or something
deal with は B1 で、問題を解決したり何かを成し遂げたりするために行動するという語義です。
General enquiries are dealt with by our head office.
be assigned to は「担当に決まった」
Cambridge の assign は C1 で、often passive のラベルが付いています。
C1 [often passive] to give a particular job or piece of work to someone
受け身で使うのが基本の形なので、担当に決まったことを伝える文は be assigned to で組み立てます。
The case has been assigned to our most senior officer.
担当者の英語に向かない語｜representative・liaison・go-to の守備範囲
和英の感覚で「担当者」に当てがちな語の中には、英英辞典で見ると守備範囲がずれているものがあります。
representative は代表と営業
Cambridge の representative、B2 の語義です。
B2 someone who speaks or does something officially for another person or group of people
Cambridge Business English では、会社の商品やサービスを売る人、つまり sales representative の意味が並びます。
someone whose job is to sell a company’s products or services, especially by visiting or phoning customers
短くした rep には、Cambridge が informal のラベルを付けています。
「組織を代表して話す人」か「営業担当」を指す語なので、経理や出荷の窓口のような一般の担当者には合いません。

liaison は組織をつなぐ係
[C] mainly US someone who helps groups to work effectively with each other
Cambridge はこの語義に mainly US のラベルを付けています。
Oxford の語義も、2つの集団や組織の関係をうまく保つことを仕事にしている人です。
部署と部署、会社と会社の間に立つ連絡係なら当てはまりますが、1つの業務を受け持つ担当者には範囲が広すぎます。
go-to は「いちばん頼れる人」
Cambridge は go-to を名詞の前に置く形容詞として載せ、mainly US のラベルを付けています。
used to describe the best person, thing, or place for a particular purpose or need
例文は He was the company’s go-to guy for new ideas. で、担当というより「その分野で頼りにされる人」を指す語。
社内の雑談なら使える場面もありますが、取引先への正式な窓口の案内には point of contact のほうが語義に沿います。
担当者を名乗る・尋ねる・紹介する英語メールの全文

1文目で担当業務を言い、2文目で窓口であることを伝える組み立てです。
3文目の reach は Cambridge で B2 の動詞で、電話やメールなどで離れた場所の相手と連絡を取るという語義を持ちます。

担当の交代は、新しい人を主語にして has been assigned to と受け身で書くと、誰が決めたのかに触れずに事実だけを伝えられます。

4行目は、Oxford の point of contact の語義である「組織に用があるときに話す相手」を、そのまま1行にしたものです。
担当範囲を for のあとに名詞で置けば、in charge of を使った文の形にしなくても役目が伝わります。
署名に担当を書くときに押さえたいのは、次の3点。
- 担当範囲は「for＋名詞」で短く書く
- person in charge だけの行は置かない（何の担当かが残らないため）
- 部署名の行と担当範囲の行は分ける

Q. person in charge は間違いですか
間違いではありません。
3冊とも見出し語には立てていないものの、Longman の例文と Cambridge の例文 with no single person in charge の中に、そのままの形で出てきます。
ただし「何の」担当かを言わないと情報が足りないので、the person in charge of ～ と後ろに業務を付けて使うのが確実です。
Q. contact person は使えませんか
今回確かめた Cambridge・Oxford・Longman の3冊には、contact person という並びが1か所も出てきません。
辞書で語義を確かめられる言い方に寄せるなら、point of contact か、動詞を使った Please contact ～ の形を選びましょう。
Q. in charge と responsible の違いは
in charge of は Longman のビジネス辞書で「管理する人」と定義され、その件を仕切る立場の響きがあります。
responsible は Longman が第1語義に「責めを負う」意味を置いているので、トラブルの場面で他人に向けて使うときは handle に替えるのが無難です。
Q. 担当を外れたらどう言いますか
Longman の in charge の例文に Commissioner Gattrell was no longer in charge. という形があり、no longer を入れれば「もう担当ではない」と言えます。
自分のことなら I’m no longer in charge of this project. とし、続けて新しい point of contact の名前を書き添えましょう。
担当者の英語のまとめ
担当者の英語は、1語の訳語を探すより「何をする担当なのか」を動詞や前置詞で言うほうが確実です。
- 名乗るなら I’m in charge of ～ か I’m responsible for ～
- 窓口を示すなら point of contact（Oxford と Longman に語義あり）
- 担当を尋ねるなら Who handles ～?（責める響きを避けられる）
- contact 1語は「つて」、representative は「代表・営業担当」寄り
- 担当に決まったと伝えるなら be assigned to
相手が知りたいのは肩書きではなく、「この人に何を聞けばよいか」という1点です。
担当範囲を名詞で具体的に置けば、どの語を選んでも相手は迷わずに済みます。
