海外の会社へ初めて問い合わせのメールを英語で送ろうとして、件名の1語で手が止まる。
inquiry なのか、question なのか、それとも query なのか。
サイトの窓口には Enquiries と書いてあって、綴りまで違う。
問い合わせの英語は、辞書を3冊並べると1語ではなく3つの層に分かれます。
名詞の inquiry と query、そして動詞の contact と inquire。
さらに綴りの違う enquiry が、UK と US の境目に立っています。

問い合わせの英語は inquiry が軸｜先に結論

1通目で迷ったら、名詞は inquiry、動詞は contact で組めば外しません。
query は、相手の説明や請求の中身に「ここが分からない」と1点を指すときの語です。
問い合わせの英語①inquiry と enquiry｜綴りの差は UK と US
まず、いちばん多く迷う綴りの話から片づけます。
Cambridge は enquiry を UK の綴りとして扱う
Cambridge Dictionary の inquiry の見出しには、次の注記があります。
inquiry noun ( UK also enquiry )
UK では enquiry とも書く、という扱いです。
enquiry の項を開くと、ラベルは UK だけで、語義は inquiry へ送られています。
enquiry noun [ C or U ] UK … B1 → inquiry
つまり Cambridge では、enquiry は inquiry の UK 向けの別綴りという位置づけです。
Oxford は「意味で書き分ける人もいる」と注記する
Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary は、さらに踏み込んだ注記を付けています。
In British English people sometimes distinguish between enquiry and inquiry , using enquiry for the general meaning of ‘a request for information’ and inquiry for the more particular meaning of ‘official investigation’
However, you can use either spelling in either meaning. In American English inquiry is usually used in both meanings.
英国では、情報を求める一般の問い合わせを enquiry、公的な調査を inquiry と書き分ける人がいる、という説明です。
ただし同じ注記の中で、どちらの綴りをどちらの意味に使ってもよいとも言っています。
米国英語なら inquiry 1本
Oxford の注記によると、米国英語では両方の意味に inquiry を使うのが普通です。
3冊目の Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English は、enquiry の項が短い1行だけです。

1通の中で綴りを混ぜないことだけ守れば、どちらを選んでも辞書の上では誤りになりません。

綴りの次は、inquiry という語そのものの中身です。
実はこの語には、問い合わせのほかにもう1つの大きな意味があります。
Cambridge は「質問」を先に置く
Cambridge の inquiry、第1語義はこれです。
( QUESTION ) B1 [ C or U ] (the process of asking ) a question
第2語義は C2 の「公的な調査」です。
Oxford は「公的な調査」を先に置く
Oxford の inquiry は、順番が逆になっています。
最初に出てくる語義は、公的な調査のほうでした。

問い合わせの語義は、その次に並んでいます。
[countable] a request for information about somebody/something; a question about somebody/something
同じ inquiry でも、辞書によって先頭に置く意味が違います。
Longman は質問を1番、調査を3番に置く
Longman の inquiry は、1番が質問、3番が調査です。

ビジネスで誤解を生まない inquiry の使い方
調査の意味と取り違えられないように、何についての問い合わせかを後ろに付けます。
Cambridge の Business English の項が、そのための前置詞を見せています。
make an inquiry about sth We have received hundreds of calls from people making inquiries about availability of the product .
inquiry about のあとに対象を置けば、読み手は「調査」とは受け取りにくくなります。
一方で inquiry into は、Oxford と Longman がどちらも調査の語義の中で使っている形です。
問い合わせは about で受ける
不満や苦情を伝える連絡は、inquiry ではなく別の語の担当です。

問い合わせの英語②query｜疑問や確認の色が付く1語
2つめの名詞が query です。
日本語では同じ「問い合わせ」でも、inquiry とは向きが少し違います。
query は「疑い」を含む質問
Cambridge の query は B2 の語で、語義はこうです。
B2 a question , often expressing doubt about something or looking for an answer from an authority
「何かを疑っている」か「権限のある人に答えを求めている」質問、という説明でした。
Longman も、確認の意味を語義の中に入れています。
a question that you ask to get information , or to check that something is true or correct
query は、すでに受け取った説明や数字に対して「ここは合っているか」と尋ねるときに向く語です。
請求や契約の中身を問う query
Cambridge の Business English の項には、議題の1項目についての例文があります。
a query about sth I have a query about the second item on the agenda .
Longman の例文は、契約についての問い合わせでした。
Give us a ring if you have any queries about the contract.
どちらも、相手の出した書類の中の1点を指しています。
動詞の query になると、疑いの色がもっと濃くなります。
to express doubt about something or ask for more information : Someone in the accounts department had queried his expense claim .
経費の申請に経理が疑問を出した、という例文です。
question との距離
Cambridge は query の同義語として、enquiry UK と question を挙げています。
Oxford の question の第1語義は、情報を求める文・句・語という広い定義でした。

question は、問い合わせに限らず質問全般を指す一番広い語です。

問い合わせる英語の動詞｜contact と get in touch と inquire の格の差
名詞の次は、「問い合わせる」という動詞です。
ここで、辞書がはっきりと格の差をつけています。
contact は「連絡する」の基本動詞
Cambridge の contact（動詞）は A2 の語です。
A2 [ T ] to communicate with someone by calling or sending them a letter , email , etc.
他動詞なので、contact のすぐ後ろに相手を置きます。
Longman は、この点で間違えやすい形を ✗ 付きで示しています。
Contact the sales department for details. ✗ Don’t say: Contact with the sales department for details.
contact with と書きたくなっても、動詞の contact に with は付けません。
名詞なら事情が変わり、get in contact with や make contact with の形で with を取ります。
get in touch は日常の言い方
Longman の contact の項には、言葉の格についての注記があります。
Register In everyday English, people often say get in touch with someone rather than contact someone
日常の英語では contact より get in touch with のほうがよく使われる、という説明です。
Cambridge でも、be, get, keep, etc. in touch は B1 の句として載っています。
B1 to communicate or continue to communicate with someone by using a phone or writing to them
社外への1通目でも、軽めの文面なら get in touch で十分に通じます。
inquire は改まった動詞
Longman は inquire に formal のラベルを付けました。
inquire … verb [ intransitive, transitive ] formal ASK A QUESTION to ask someone for information
Oxford の類義語の欄でも、enquire／inquire は rather formal です。
You can ask or enquire about something politely, but enquire is more formal.

問い合わせる側の英語の1通目｜I am writing to inquire about の型
ここからは、実際に送る1通目の組み立てです。
書き出しの宛名と結びの言葉は別の記事で扱うので、ここでは本文の中身だけに絞ります。

用件の1行目は Longman の例文の形
Longman の inquire の項には、そのまま手紙の1行目に使える例文があります。
inquire about I am writing to inquire about your advertisement in ‘The Times’.
I am writing to inquire about のあとに、問い合わせたい対象を置く形です。
この1行で「問い合わせの連絡である」ことと「何についてか」が同時に伝わります。
formal の語なので、初めての取引先や公的な窓口に向いています。
問い合わせる側の例文（全文）
改まった1通目の例です。
Subject: Inquiry about bulk orders of Model A Dear Sales Team, I am writing to inquire about bulk orders of Model A. We are a distributor based in Osaka, Japan. Could you tell us the following? 1. The minimum order quantity 2. The delivery lead time to Japan 3. Whether you offer volume discounts I would appreciate it if you could reply by the end of next week. Best regards, Taro Yamada Purchasing Department, ABC Trading
件名の Inquiry about は、本文1行目の inquire about と同じ語の名詞形です。
料金の1点だけを尋ねる追記なら、I have one query about the setup fee. のように query に替えると、全体の問い合わせと個別の疑問の区別が伝わります。
問い合わせを受けた側の英語｜返し方の入口になる1行
今度は、問い合わせを受けた側の話です。
返信全体の型は別の記事で扱うので、ここでは最初の1行に使う語だけを見ます。

「問い合わせを受ける」は receive と get
Longman の inquiry の連語の欄には、受ける側の動詞が並んでいます。
get/have an inquiry (= receive it )
receive an inquiry formal: The television station has received several inquiries from viewers requesting a repeat of the programme.
改まった文なら receive、ふだんの文なら get か have です。
「問い合わせに対応する」は answer と deal with
対応する側の動詞も、Longman がまとめて載せています。
handle/deal with an inquiry Staff will be available to deal with inquiries.
answer an inquiry ( also respond to an inquiry formal )
respond to には formal のラベルが付いています。
顧客への返信の1行目なら、Thank you for your inquiry about … と受けてから本題に入る形が組みやすいでしょう。
なお、この Thank you for your inquiry という1文そのものは、今回落とした Cambridge・Oxford・Longman の inquiry と enquiry の項には例文として載っていません。
辞書が裏付けているのは、inquiry を receive／answer／deal with する、という語の組み合わせのほうです。
Oxford の例文に見る「受けた側」の言い方
Oxford の query の例文は、窓口の側から書かれた1文でした。
Our assistants will be happy to answer your queries.
inquiry の項には、調べてから折り返すときの1文があります。
I’ll have to make a few inquiries and get back to you.
すぐに答えられない問い合わせを受けたときは、この形がそのまま使えます。
受けた側の例文（全文）
Subject: Re: Inquiry about bulk orders of Model A Dear Mr Yamada, Thank you for your inquiry about bulk orders of Model A. I have checked with our logistics team, and here are the answers to your questions. 1. The minimum order quantity is 500 units. 2. The delivery lead time to Japan is about four weeks. 3. 最後の1行の do not hesitate to contact は、3冊がそろって例文に持っている形です（Cambridge は don’t の形）。
Oxford の contact（動詞）の項は、do not hesitate to contact somebody を成句として挙げています。
問い合わせ窓口とフォームの英語表記｜Enquiries・Customer Services・contact details
最後の場面は、サイトや案内板の「問い合わせ窓口」の表記です。
UK の窓口表記は Enquiries
Oxford の inquiry の項には、場所としての語義があります。
inquiries [plural] (British English) a place where you can get information Ask at inquiries to see if your bag has been handed in.
Cambridge の Business English も、enquiries を場所の意味で載せています。
enquiries [ U ] a place where you can get information : Ask at enquiries for directions to the conference room .
英国向けの案内なら、窓口の札は Enquiries の1語で通じます。
Oxford の場所の語義には British English のラベルが付いています。
顧客の問い合わせを受ける部署は customer service
Cambridge の customer service の語義は、問い合わせ窓口の仕事そのものです。
( UK also customer services ) the part of an organization that answers customers ‘ questions , exchanges goods that are not satisfactory , etc.
Oxford の inquiry の例文にも、この部署名が出てきます。
All inquiries should be addressed to the customer services department.
「お問い合わせは顧客サービス部まで」の英訳に、そのまま使える形です。
フォームの欄名とボタンの表記
問い合わせフォームの「連絡先」の欄には、contact details が使えます。
contact details noun [ plural ] the information that you need in order to communicate with someone, such as a telephone number or an email address
Cambridge の例文は、フォームの案内文そのものの形でした。
Please email us your contact details and we will get in touch with you.
一方で、よく見るボタンの Contact us は、辞書の見出しとしては立っていません。
Wiktionary で contact us を引くと、まだ項目が無いという案内が返ってきます。
形としては、動詞 contact に目的語 us を付けただけの命令文です。

問い合わせの件名は Inquiry と Question のどちらがよいのか
件名には Inquiry about … の形が向いています。
Oxford の question は情報を求める文全般を指す広い語で、件名の1語だけでは用件が絞れません。
どちらを使う場合も、about のあとに対象を書き足します。
