海外の取引先に値引きを英語でお願いしたいのに、最初の1語で手が止まる。
discount と書けばよいのか、reduction なのか、それとも rebate なのか。
値引きの英語は、discount を軸にすれば大きく外しません。
ただ、値引きの「形」によって、英英辞典が当てる語は変わります。
店が値札を下げるのか、払ったあとでお金が戻るのか、まとめ買いの条件付きなのか。

- 値引きの基本の1語は discount。Cambridge は A2、Oxford は Business の b1 に置いた基本語
- 下がった「額」を言うなら reduction。値段の話に固定したいときは price reduction

頼むときと提示するときの値引き
頼む側と提示する側で、入れ替わるのは動詞のほうです。
名詞の discount は同じまま、頼む側は ask for、提示する側は offer や give を前に置きます。
Longman も discount の項の COLLOCATIONS で、get・give・offer・ask for の4つを並べました。
動詞との組み合わせで覚えると、そのまま文になります。
書面で伝えるときの値引き
メールや書面では、何に対する値引きなのかを前置詞で示します。
Oxford は discount の項で、discount for somebody と discount on something を別々の型として載せています。
値引きの対象は on、値引きを受ける人は for という分け方です。

Cambridge Dictionary の discount、名詞の語義です。

Cambridge の定義では、discount は「いつもの値段からの引き下げ」です。
Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary の語義も並べます。

Oxford は「いつもの値段から引かれる額」と定義し、同義語に reduction を挙げました。
Longman の語義です。

3冊とも、基準を usual price（いつもの値段）に置いています。
「いつもの値段より安くする」が、discount の芯です。
discount を動詞で使う形
discount は、動詞としても使えます。
Cambridge は動詞の語義を2つに分け、( REDUCE ) の側に「値段を下げる」を置いています。

often passive の表示どおり、discounted prices のような受け身の形で出てくることが多い語です。
ただし、動詞の discount にはもう1つの顔があります。
Cambridge のもう1つの語義は ( NOT CONSIDER ) で、「考える価値が無いと判断する」という意味でした。
You shouldn’t discount the possibility of him coming back.
Oxford も同じ語義に (formal) を付け、同義語に dismiss を挙げています。
動詞は「値引く」と「軽く見る」の2つ
We will discount your proposal. と書くと、値引きではなく「提案を取り合わない」と読まれる余地が生まれます。
値引きを伝えるときは、名詞の discount を offer や give と組み合わせるほうが安全です。
discount は書面でも使える基本語
discount は、くだけた語でも、堅い語でもありません。
Cambridge と Longman の discount の項には、informal のラベルが1つも付いていません。
Oxford は Topics の欄で、discount を Shopping・Business・Money の b1 に分類しました。
店頭の買い物でも、会社同士の取引でも、そのまま置ける語ということです。
値引きの英語 reduction｜下がった「額」を言う語
Oxford が discount の同義語に挙げたのが、reduction でした。
ただし reduction は、値段だけに使う語ではありません。
Cambridge の reduction の第1語義は ( MAKING SMALLER ) で、大きさや量や程度が小さくなること全般を指します。
そこで Cambridge Business English Dictionary は、値段の意味を COMMERCE の語義として独立させています。

こちらの定義では、reduction は「値段が下げられた額」にあたります。
Oxford も [countable] の語義で、同じく「何かが安くされる額」を立てました。

reduction を値引きの意味に固定したいときは、前に price を付けます。
Cambridge・Oxford・Longman の3冊とも、reduction の項に price reduction の形を載せています。
reduction を裸で置くと、人員の削減とも読めるからです。
Longman の reduction の項には、staff reductions の例文も同じように並んでいます。
make a reduction で値引きを申し出る
Longman Business Dictionary には、売り手の側からそのまま使える形があります。
We can make a reduction (= sell something more cheaply ) if you buy in bulk.
make a reduction は「もっと安く売る」の意味で、Longman は括弧の中に言い換えまで添えています。
まとめ買いを条件にした値引きの申し出に、そのまま使える1文です。
Oxford の追加の例文には、I asked for a reduction as the dress was damaged. もあります。
値引きの英語 markdown｜店が値札を下げるときの語
小売の値下げには、markdown という専用の語があります。
Cambridge Business English Dictionary の語義です。
COMMERCE a lower price on an item than it was previously being sold for
基準が「以前の売値」になっているところが、discount との違いです。
Longman Business Dictionary は、値下げの行為と、下げた額の両方を語義に入れました。
COMMERCE the act of reducing the price of something, or the amount by which the price is reduced
例文は clearance markdowns of goods で、在庫を処分するための値下げの話です。
動詞は mark something down
動詞にするときは、mark something down と分けて書きます。
Cambridge の ( REDUCE ) の語義には、値下げの目的まで入っています。
to reduce the price of something, usually in order to encourage people to buy it
「買ってもらうために値段を下げる」という、売り場の動きそのものです。
Oxford は反対の語に mark something up を挙げ、関連する名詞として markdown を示しています。
取引先への値引きに markdown は不向き
markdown は、売り手が自分の商品の値札を下げる語です。
取引先に「値引きしてほしい」と頼む場面とは、辞書の語義が噛み合いません。
さらに Cambridge Business English Dictionary は、markdown に FINANCE・STOCK MARKET の語義も載せ、株価の下落にも使っています。
取引のメールでは、discount か reduction を選ぶほうが読み違いを防げます。
値引きの英語で rebate は「払ったあとで戻るお金」
rebate を「値引き」と訳した単語表を見かけることがあります。
ところが英英辞典を開くと、話はそれほど単純ではありません。
Cambridge Dictionary の rebate の語義です。
an amount of money that is returned to you, especially by the government, for example when you have paid too much tax
Cambridge の定義の中心は、払いすぎた税金などが戻ってくるお金です。
Longman も同じ向きで、払いすぎた税金や家賃が戻るお金を先頭に置きました。

rebate の芯は「払ったあとで戻る」ことです。
商品の rebate は買ったあとに戻る一部
商売の場面の rebate もあります。
Cambridge Business English Dictionary は COMMERCE の語義として、メーカーや店が、買った客に払い戻すお金を載せています。
COMMERCE an amount of money that a manufacturer or store pays back to customers when they buy something
Cambridge はこの語義のすぐ下に Compare discount noun を添え、discount と比べて読むよう示しています。
Longman Business Dictionary も、買ったときに値段の一部が客に払い戻されるものとしました。
Oxford だけは「払う前」の語義も持つ
3冊のうち1冊だけ、違う語義を載せています。

Oxford はこの2つ目の語義で、rebate を「払う前に引かれる額」とし、同義語に discount を挙げています。
一方、Cambridge と Longman の rebate の項には、before you pay の語句が1つも出てきません。
2冊は「払ったあと」だけ、Oxford の1冊は「払う前」も認める、という割れ方でした。
その場で引く値引きなら、rebate より discount を使うほうが確実です。

値引きの英語 knock off は口語｜名詞の knock-off は模造品
会話で耳にする値引きの言い方に、knock off があります。
Oxford の語義です。

Cambridge も Longman も、値段を引く knock off に informal のラベルを付けています。
3冊がそろって informal なので、取引先へのメールや書面には向きません。
knock off には値引き以外の意味が多い
knock off の厄介なところは、意味の多さにあります。
Longman は knock off の項に、stop work・reduce a price・reduce amount・produce・murder・steal の6つの語義を番号付きで並べました。
値引きの意味は、そのうちの2番目にすぎません。
Cambridge でも、仕事を切り上げる意味のほうが値引きより先に出てきます。
名詞の knock-off は安い模造品
名詞になると、意味はさらに大きく変わります。
Oxford は名詞の knock-off に (informal) を付け、次の語義を載せています。
an object such as a fashion item or an electronic device that is a cheaper copy of the original, more expensive version
Cambridge の knockoff も、人気の品や質の高い品の、安い複製や質の劣る複製と定義しています。
Cambridge Business English Dictionary は、動詞の knock off sth に「他社の製品の安い複製を、たいていは違法に作る」という語義まで載せました。
knock-off は値引き品ではない
値引き品のことを伝えたいのに名詞の knock-off を置くと、模造品の話になってしまいます。
値引きの英語を条件で言い分ける｜volume・bulk・cash・trade
会社同士の取引の値引きには、条件ごとに名前の付いた discount があります。
Cambridge Business English Dictionary の語義から、4つの条件を並べました。

cash discount は、支払いの速さと払い方が条件になります。
trade discount は、同じ業界の事業者や販売店に向けた値引きです。
Oxford の例文 They offer a trade discount to builders. は、建築業者に業者向けの値引きを出す文でした。
条件付きの値引きを1文で言う
条件を語の名前で言えば、値引きの理由まで一度に伝わります。

対象が限られる concession
似た語の concession には、Cambridge が ( LOWER PRICE ) の語義に UK のラベルを付けています。
学生や高齢者などに用意された値下げを指すので、取引先との値引きの話には discount で通すのが無難でしょう。
値引きを頼む英語｜ask for a discount から組み立てる
値引きを頼む動詞は、Longman の COLLOCATIONS にある ask for です。
ask for a discount I asked for a discount because the vase was slightly damaged.
例文は「花瓶に少し傷があったので値引きを頼んだ」で、頼む理由を because で添えています。
頼むときは、理由を1つ添えると相手が判断しやすくなります。
対面や電話で値引きを頼む
口頭では、値引きがあるかどうかを尋ねる疑問文が使いやすい形です。
Oxford の例文 Do you give any discount for students? は、そのまま疑問文の型になります。
Longman にも Do you get a discount if you pay in cash? という例文が載っています。

最後の knock a bit off は、3冊が informal とした knock off を使った言い方です。

メールでは、Could you や Would it be possible to で書き出すと、頼む形がやわらかくなります。
値引きの対象は on、条件は if のあとに置きます。

提示する側の動詞は、offer と give です。
Longman の COLLOCATIONS は give (somebody) a discount と offer (somebody) a discount を並べ、Many theatres give discounts to students. を例文にしています。
Oxford は at a discount という句も載せ、括弧で at reduced prices と言い換えました。
